Unless he was wrong or lying, of course, but fear tended to be hard to imitate, especially when the person you were talking to could smell it. And that meant there was a chance Diego could really get killed, too, though how he wasn't dead already was still beyond him.

So if escaping from wherever 'here' was remained a distinct possibility, he'd rather be alive.
