Day 37: Sun Room (4th Shift)

There were still too many things on Armand's mind for him to truly relax. The morning with Alec had been a help. And seeing that TK was going to be well helped him know that it was time to work out something else, but what? He'd already, without success again, tried to reach one of the club leaders about his sole idea of something new and different. Maybe it was hopeless.

There was no way he was going to play with paper and glue like a small child, and he glared at the nurse as best he could until she gave up on the idea. There was a free chair in the Sun Room--in fact, there were many free chairs--where he settled down to see what the new patients looked like. Prisoners, not patients. He felt bad that he had to remind himself. Even if he was crazy, he wasn't going to give in to Dr. Landel's game, not today. He nibbled on an overgrown cuticle and kept an eye on the room. No dozing today.

"Some people have no other alternative," Sousuke said. Considering he had failed to protect Chidori and now had to rescue her by any means necessary, MITHRIL would look upon this with a critical eye. Which meant that he might be a mercenary again once this was over.

But that life was far better than being trapped here. Than letting Miku remain here.

"But there are those here who should not be here. Who have lives. Who deserve freedom," he smiled lightly. "Ourselves included."

Allelujah returned the smile shyly and nodded, although he couldn't say that he was convinced that he deserved freedom, and that he didn't belong in a place like this. "There are a lot of people who I would be glad to see free of this place," he replied seriously. "The rest of us just have to help them as best we can."

He frowned thoughtfully for a few moments. "Have you visited the second floor yet? There's a laboratory stocked with useful chemicals."

"I haven't," Sousuke confessed himself ignorant of this laboratory. He'd been on supply runs with Miku before, but not in terms of chemicals. Besides, he didn't want her around things that could potentially explode.

"Are you planning on making explosives?"

"There was a monster there," Allelujah admitted, not wanting to let Sousuke believe that it was safe (not that anywhere here was). "But the trip was worthwhile. Chemicals, scalpels, surgical implements." All kinds of things which made good weapons in a pinch and all things that he had had a long time to think up ways to use as such.

"Explosives, yes," he replied with a nod. "I made smoke bombs which would be useful if I had matches. But the chemicals can be used as weapons on their own."

Sousuke pondered for a moment, "I've heard that people have been able to get outside the walls at night. There must be a fire source for sale in the town we go to every week."

Explosives, while dangerous, were Sousuke's specialty. He'd blown up many a shoebox in his day...

"I heard that too," Allelujah said with a frown. "No-one seems to have escaped though, even if they can." Which meant either people were lying to cause hope (or false hope), or the influence of the Institute extended far beyond the walls. How far could a person walk in a night? "It might be possible to get that far," Allelujah admitted thoughtfully. Perhaps that should be his next port of call.

He smiled a little. "I feel ridiculous talking about this place having magic or being able to control time," he said, running a hand through his hair.

Sousuke smiled a little and one of his shoulders shook a little. Probably the equivalent of a laugh for the young sergeant. "I understand the feeling. I'm becoming more accustomed to it, though. The technology I was working with before I cam here wasn't only unreliable, none of the technicians actually knew what it was.

"I suppose it could have been called magic..." Sousuke pondered this for a moment. "The driving force came from within. Is that how magic works?"

"I was worried that it was just me. So many people seem to take it for granted," Allelujah replied with a soft laugh, glad to have someone who seemed to come from a world similar to his own. He listened curiously to what Sousuke said about that technology. "I wouldn't know. There's no magic in my world. But... there was science which I suppose could be considered magic. Once group were experimenting with a type of brain waves, manipulating them so that their created soldiers could talk mind to mind with them, even in some cases, if the person was blind, deaf, dumb and unable to move their body."
