Gin preferred it if people didn't know which way his feelings went, what he liked, what he didn't. If they didn't know him, they couldn't know his motives and they couldn't know his weaknesses. It was as simple as that.

"Don't make much difference to me darlin'. There's more n' enough clubs here t' go 'round. I ain't much for leadin', so it's easiest for me t'help out in a group." A lie perhaps, but how were they to know that? And should the Arts and Crafts group dissolve, well, it would leave him with more options as well as more problems. Turning this place into a war zone and causing the patients to fight one another would certainly be interesting, though probably only be useful in entertaining the good doctor.
