Nightshift 36: M21-M30 Hallway

((Specifically M22))

Pain. Adelheid suddenly felt a stab of agony radiating from his right eye, where that ghostly woman had brushed up against him. He could feel the lines of the tattoo starting to spread across his skin, the pain extending until he nearly couldn't think straight.

And he had things to do, people to meet and weapons to make. Adelheid gritted his teeth and swore he would make it through. It was just pain, right? Just pain... he could endure that. He had to endure it.

M28

When the night time announcements came, Near made no move to head out the door. It was more familiar, to be the one waiting as opposed to the one expected to advance. It certainly was easier to focus as he sat at his desk, pushing his car around the tray which had once held a whole dinner, and now held less than half of a half. Commander Rester would be proud.

Already he was planning for that night, considering the routes he would take, and the adjustments to his previous ideas that were necessary. New patients coming in meant that the hall Near had utilized the night before no doubt would be filled, and in turn, that meant he would be wasting his time to check on the supplies himself. That had become a question for the bulletin (which, he had observed, people seemed more likely to answer in the morning than later in the day).

On the plus side, that meant he and Brooklyn could head upstairs sooner. Near wanted to take a look at the chemical closet before anyone else got there to take an inventory, and of course to procure whatever he might need. In order to best do that, however, the teen knew a second trip to the janitor's closet would be necessary; there along with additional supplies, a second hand truck could be obtained. Using the same method from the night before would give desired stability to the chemicals when they were transported, something that was all the more important when such things were in their natural state as opposed to having already been made into toilet cleaner.

But first, his flashlight. Hopefully Brooklyn would remember to bring it along with his bag from the night before. Otherwise there would be another side trip before the main tasks began.

Toboe slid to a stop in front of what he thought was M23, waiting a minute or two to fully examine the number and compare it to the rumpled sheet of paper still clenched in his hand. Well, it looked right.

Satisfied, Toboe nodded and knocked on the door. He didn't want to just barge in unannounced...

Finally.

As soon as Yukari reached the appropriate door, she was quick to set her things down, if only to give her arms a break from the trip. Oh, jeez, she was never going to pull something like that off on her own again.

After a breath, she lifted a hand to knock on the door of M22. "Adelheid-san? I'm here!"

Hitsugaya had slept away the entirety of his dinner, which was fine. He didn't really want to deal with Sanzo--the man had disappeared again anyways--and his stomach revolted at the thought of real food at this point anyways.

Still, the sleep had done him some good, and while he didn't feel anywhere near 100% he certainly felt better. Fortunately his team was just going to fetch and babysit Renji, so it shouldn't have been a difficult task. Even he couldn't hide admitting that getting things resolved with Momo had done him a world of good, as well. A great burden had been lifted, he knew, knowing that this feeling he had been hiding even from himself had been justified.

He wasn't about to reiterate the point to Momo, of course. Once was enough, as heavily drugged as he had been.

There was a knock on his door, and he quickly went to the closet and changed into his nighttime attire. "Just a second," he called out, doing his best to avoid slurring his words. He was sure he still looked a mess, and the smell of vomit was faint but still barely noticable to him. Artemis probably wouldn't notice, it was too faint to be picked up unless the boy decided to hug him or something horribly unreasonable like that. If it were toboe...well, he only hoped the boy had human senses to go with his human body.

He grabbed his blade and opened the door, noting Toboe. "We're still waiting for Fowl," Hitsugaya said. "Then we'll head out. Tonight we're tending to another member of Arts and Crafts who hasn't been seen at all today to make sure he doesn't do anything dumb tonight."

Yukari opened the door, propping the door open with an arm while she hovered by the doorway. She intended to greet him first before dragging everything back inside, but it looked as though she had caught him in the middle of something.

"Oh, sorry to disturb you," she apologized, first grabbing the two brooms and setting them against the wall by the door. Quickly, she gathered the table legs in her arms again, glancing around to pick the best spot for them before setting them somewhere on the floor by Adelheid's bed.

She then paused, curiously glancing over in his direction. "Is that all you need from me?"

This was the second time he apologized to her, and Yukari couldn't quite figure out why. Inquiring over the bulletin didn't get her anywhere, so she wasn't sure if she should ask again; well, whatever he was sorry about, at least she could say there wasn't any hard feelings over it.

Fortunately for him, Yukari didn't catch what he was trying to hide-- he seemed distracted enough by what he was rummaging through in his closet, and by the time he responded she was mulling over his questions enough to not notice anything strange about him. "Typically we use longbows during practice," Yukari began to explain. "I'd say make the length of it somewhere around eighty-five centimeters, since that more or less fits my height."

Brooklyn had indeed remembered to bring the flashlight, along with the other items Near had wanted. Reaching the boy's door, the gargoyle knocked a couple times. "Hey, Nate? I've got your flashlight..."

He didn't think he would have left. It would make things a lot more difficult if he had. Didn't seem like Nate's style, though. Should he go ahead and open the door? It wasn't as if the boy was likely to be indecent or anything.

Unfortunately for Hitsugaya, Toboe still had a far and away better nose than any human ever did, but he did know better than to point out that Hitsugaya smelled like sickness. He just looked concerned--it could have been concern for the other man for all Hitsugaya knew.

The wolf just nodded. "Alright."

Yukari blinked, staring at him expressionlessly until she brought the palm of her hand to her forehead, nearly looking like she was pained; string, of course. How could she forget that?! Obviously she wasn't as prepared for this as she thought, letting all her anticipation getting the better of her...

"I... didn't," she answered sheepishly. "I guess I could go find something for it."

Wolfram's conversation with Kaoru had been interesting enough, but what bothered him more than anything else was that Yuuri was late. He waited far later than he probably should have, hoping for some sign of his fiance knocking. But the evening got later, and there was still nothing.

He should have known that Yuuri would get into trouble if left on his own.

Grabbing his sword, Yuuri's reinforced bat, the useless radio, and his flashlight, Wolfram set off in the direction of Yuuri's room, deciding to start there before jumping to any conclusions.

What worried him was that the light in his flashlight was flickering just a little. It probably wouldn't last too much longer without new batteries.

"Come in." Near opened a desk drawer when Brooklyn knocked, carefully putting the car within. As much as he enjoyed having an actual toy, Near knew he would be too busy to utilize it properly during the night. Taking it along would amount to nothing more than risking it being lost along the way, something Near absolutely wouldn't have. Also in the drawer went the two letters he had received from Roger. There was no need to hide them, as Mello was busy that night, and had no knowledge of Near's room number. Not yet at least.

That done, Near moved out of the chair and to the center of the room. Almost immediately after he stopped playing with the car, he had begun to twirl his hair again. When Brooklyn opened the door and came in, the boy offered a grin, equally pleased to see the man himself, and the items. So far, the experiment was going well.

"And how was your day today, Brooklyn?" He wasn't asking because he cared so much. It was more because Near knew that many would suffer from the presence of the visitors. If Brooklyn had been one of them, Near would need to know that before they proceeded. The man's mental state was crucial, since if they ran across anything unpleasant, Brooklyn would be the one fighting it.

Setting the items on the bed, Brooklyn stepped into the room with a shrug. "Not bad. A bit dull." He hadn't gotten a visitor himself, and had in fact done nothing much at all that day. The highlight had probably been when he almost got to play a card game with someone. That had to say something.

At least Near was starting off trying to be friendly. Kinda. "How about you?"

[identity profile] remedying.livejournal.com 2008-10-30 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Are you sure?" Yukari interjected quickly, sounding as though she were reluctant to take him up on his offer so easily. "I don't want to make you go out of your way because I forgot something."

[identity profile] remedying.livejournal.com 2008-10-30 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
"Well..." She had to admit, it would be very helpful, even if she didn't like the idea of burdening Adelheid with that task. He knew the ropes better than she did, so perhaps he could locate what they needed quicker than she could. With a light sigh, she gave into his request. "All right, no reason to say no."

[identity profile] remedying.livejournal.com 2008-10-30 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
"I'll come by to grab it," Yukari answered, now displaying a much brighter expression. Chances were she'd be out and about anyway, so no use waiting around, right? "That way you don't have to waste time walking all the way to my room."

Outside M25

Elle paused outside Eddie's door, running a hand through her hair and once again attempting to tug her shirt down to reveal more of her cleavage. Of course it didn't work. She wanted a new shirt.

She rapped her knuckles against the door, accidentally leaving a pattern of charred spots as the electricity she was using to see by came in contact with it. Then she pushed the door open, holding her hand in front of her to see the interior of the room.

"Eddie?" she called softly.

He wasn't there. His roommate was, asleep on the bed, but no Eddie.

Why would he do this? Why would he ask her here and then leave before she arrived? That made no sense. He was the one who had brought it up in the first place! The electricity in her hand flared angrily as her eyes scanned the empty room for a clue to where he'd gone.

Nothing. Just a sleeping guy and no Eddie.

Slamming the door loudly, Elle turned on her heel and walked away.
