But on second thought, how would they know to do so? Madame had the entire incident with Caleb hushed up before Max had even been admitted here; she'd even paid off the police. It was not so unthinkable, after all, that the staff at Landel's might be completely ignorant of any connection between Max Vyer and Caleb Stern.
