Day 30: Cafeteria, Breakfast
Hitsugaya woke with a start.
His entire body ached, but the pain was nowhere near as bad as it had been the night before. His injuries had been tended two with clean gauze and bandages, and he found every movement wasn't agony. He wasn't in the best of shape, but thanks to the miracle of landel's strange time distortion, he had mostly recovered from the vile poison without having to waste anyone else's talents.
And in his hand, still...there was the key.
He dressed quickly, sliding the key onto the key ring from his desk drawer and stuck it into his pocket. Whether the key stood to gain them anything or not, it stood as a vital reminder that they could succeed in this place. There was hope, as insignificant as it often seemed. They could beat this place.
That small shred of hope made getting up worth it.
The nurse who escorted him to breakfast was cheerful, and commented idly about how wonderful it was to see young Tommy Winters up and about again after his unfortunate run-in with a bad case of food poisoning. He smirked slightly, knowing that any lies the institute forced into their heads were only that: lies. He wouldn't buy it for a second. And on top of that, the concept of muffins sounded almost appetizing. While he still preferred his authentic Japanese cuisine, the food here was slowly becoming more and more bearable. He would have preferred a warm bowl of sweet nattou over rice over the mufffins, but they would do. The plain yogurt and fruit, on the other hand, was excellent. He piled his plate high with fruit as usual, and got several small bowls of yogurt as well.
Finding the most convenient table to the end of the food line, he took a seat and scanned for the new arrivals. New arrivals meant people who would be lost and confused. Renji did a good job of making a bulliten post last time...he should recommend abarai-fukutaicho do the same again this time.

[Waiting for Angel]

"There are always small brawls. People get angry and get in fights. New prisoners rebel against the nurses. Never anything like this..."
Right. And Angel was a vampire. He didn't seem particularly vile of a person, but neither had Aizen. As he spoke, his eyes never left the scuffle. "The fact that you're telling me what you are speaks well for yourself, but I have to warn you. You need to feed, fine. But they'd better be willing subjects...~especially~ if they work with arts and crafts. If you harm any of my men, we'll kill you. That said, I don't plan on treating you any differently from any of the other patients. We have bigger things to worry about."
As much as he didn't want to look away from the riot, knowing what he knew now, he had to get a glimpse of the man's spirit thread. He turned his attention to Angel briefly, focusing on the spirit threads that always lay hidden on the edge of his vision. It stung, but eventually he had them. Angel's thread was definitely not human, but there was something odd about it...something he had never seen before.
Good. That would make it easy to track.
His nose started to bleed, and he stopped focusing. He had a headache now, but it would fade in time. How sad that even such a simple thing hurt so much in this place.
Wiping the blood from his nose, he turned his attention back to the battle.

He looked over at last. "If I ever feed from anyone at all," he replied quietly, "you'd better kill me."
He was about to leave it at that and turn back to the fight, but Hitsugaya's sudden focus on him and subsequent bloody nose caused him to eye the other curiously, his gaze lingering on the trickle of blood for just a split second longer.
"Something wrong?" he asked.

He caught Artemis and the girl out of the corner of his eye...making a break for the hall. He looked after them. "What the hell?!?!" he said, wondering just how much Fowl had lost his marbles. "Damnit, Fowl, you're in no condition to make a break for it like that!"
He stood up instinctively, but thought the situation over. There wasn't anything he could do for the boy at this point. The nurses wouldn't buy, "I'm just trying to help the kid," and while he was very stealthy when he wanted to be, he couldn't play possum like Artemis had.
Still, maybe he'd get lucky. It was a better plan than joining the fray...

"Your what?" he asked, before his attention was distracted by—well, everything. And as much as he'd have preferred to do something other than be a spectator, there was really nothing he could do. It usually wasn't this complex—pinpoint the danger and take it out—but with the source of all this being the patients here themselves...
He followed Hitsugaya's line of vision. The nurses looked far too willing at this point to use their needles on any movement that drew the slightest bit of attention.
"You might want to sit down."

"Sorry," he said. "Reiatsu is...well...it's the strength of your soul. Most people don't have much at all until they die, but everything a god of death does, we do through our reiatsu. The more powerful the reiatsu, the greater potential for power." He glanced back at the way Artemis had gone to see him get pulled to the ground not long past his escape. Just more evidence that any attempt to escape was foolish.
"For some reason, using our abilities here causes us pain...my higher level abilities have all been limited somehow, so I can only do what a cadet straight out of the districts could do...which isn't much."
