Day 30: Cafeteria, Breakfast
Hitsugaya woke with a start.
His entire body ached, but the pain was nowhere near as bad as it had been the night before. His injuries had been tended two with clean gauze and bandages, and he found every movement wasn't agony. He wasn't in the best of shape, but thanks to the miracle of landel's strange time distortion, he had mostly recovered from the vile poison without having to waste anyone else's talents.
And in his hand, still...there was the key.
He dressed quickly, sliding the key onto the key ring from his desk drawer and stuck it into his pocket. Whether the key stood to gain them anything or not, it stood as a vital reminder that they could succeed in this place. There was hope, as insignificant as it often seemed. They could beat this place.
That small shred of hope made getting up worth it.
The nurse who escorted him to breakfast was cheerful, and commented idly about how wonderful it was to see young Tommy Winters up and about again after his unfortunate run-in with a bad case of food poisoning. He smirked slightly, knowing that any lies the institute forced into their heads were only that: lies. He wouldn't buy it for a second. And on top of that, the concept of muffins sounded almost appetizing. While he still preferred his authentic Japanese cuisine, the food here was slowly becoming more and more bearable. He would have preferred a warm bowl of sweet nattou over rice over the mufffins, but they would do. The plain yogurt and fruit, on the other hand, was excellent. He piled his plate high with fruit as usual, and got several small bowls of yogurt as well.
Finding the most convenient table to the end of the food line, he took a seat and scanned for the new arrivals. New arrivals meant people who would be lost and confused. Renji did a good job of making a bulliten post last time...he should recommend abarai-fukutaicho do the same again this time.

"Kunzite was just telling me he's been here a few days but doesn't remember all of it," Usagi informed her friend. She already could tell Ami wasn't pleased with their new company, not that Usagi could blame her... "I don't remember some days either... I must have slept through them!" the blonde girl giggled a little too forcefully in her attempt to diffuse the impending tension.

"Sailor Mercury," Kunzite growled, a knowing look forming across his lips, "Never mind that you are the smarter of the two of you, but you also seem to have been here the longest of the three of us. What can you tell us of this...institution, or better yet, this world?" He leaned forward in genuine interest; how long had it been since he'd discussed strategy with another? Kunzite struggled to squash resurfacing memories of a time long gone, a time forgotten and sacrificed in the name of "love", and as his eyes darted from Ami to Usagi, his angered scowl once more emerged.

blushed slightly at the backwards compliment about her intelligence. It was strange to be sitting here talking to Kunzite like it was a normal conversation between acquaintances. After all, the last time she'd seen him was when they killed him.
Glancing at him, she noticed a brief, strange look in his eyes before he reverted to his usual scowl, and it confused her. What did that mean? she wondered, unable to decipher the fleeting expression. And what did he mean last night when he said he was going to kill himself? Was it some sort of honour suicide? Pushing the questions to the back of her mind to dwell on later, she brought out her own notebook, in which she had kept detailed notes of her conversations and information she had gathered.
"Well...I think Usagi has been here longer than I have, but from what I can tell, you and I seem to have arrived on the same night." She glanced up at Kunzite, and then back down to her notebook quickly. "Don't read too much into it - it appears to be just a coincidence."
She scanned her notebook for the important information. "From what I have been able to ascertain, a Dr Landel, if that's his true name, has been bringing people to this false mental institution by a means not yet discovered by any person in here. Individuals wake up in the institution with no memory of how they arrived, and told they are a different
person, suffering from a mental illness, which we know is not the case."
Flipping forward a few pages, she continued. "It appears that many of the people in here are from varying worlds, some from different dimensions of earth , some from different worlds altogether, and from varying eras. However one thing that seems to be a common theme is that those who are trapped in here have special abilities which have been
stifled in someway." Ami quickly glanced at Usagi. Kunzite still didn't know that neither of them could transform.

She nodded when Ami said that Usagi had been in Landel's the longest, even if it was only by a day. But as Ami spoke about the usual Landel's business Usagi's attention wandered over to a small fight brewing not too far away. The girl cringed as she saw a needle being drawn by the nurse and turned away. She HATED needles...
Ami's glance didn't go unnoticed, but she wasn't sure how long they would be able to bluff Kunzite.
"Sometimes people disappear..." Usagi added when Ami was finished speaking, "... and I don't think it's because they escaped. Two of my roommates disappeared, and a couple of other people I met..." She would try leaving another note for Naruto on the bulletin board today.

He watched Ami cast a quick glance over to Usagi but paid it little mind, for he already knew about the power attenuation first hand, and rightfully believed that the Senshi's powers were similarly affected, but to what extent he did not know nor care. Kunzite was confident that, regardless of the abilities his tentative allies possessed, he could still overpower them in his current condition. Nevertheless, he leaned back a bit to ponder this new information, making notes of some of the key points in his journal.
"Two questions seem evident," he growled, "one, for what purpose are we being gathered here? And second, these disappearances; do they ever return? This IS billed as a mental institution, from what I've seen; as with the poor girl over there, it could be they have been taken into some sort of solitary confinement." Kunzite looked over to the action once again; the two men trying to help the girl looked to be starting the fight anew.

roommates. She bit her bottom lip. Any one of them could be next, but how and why were they being singled out?
The fight was intensifying beyond them with frightening speed. Ami
watched it with a worried look on her face. We can't join in...the nurses would just sedate us, or something worse....but those other poor patients... She tore her gaze away, trying not to think about it. Surely the other patients would be okay?
She concentrated instead on Kunzite's question.
"As far as we know, people who disappear....haven't been seen again," she said, her voice dropping to an almost inaudible whisper. "No one seems to know why we have all been brought here, although there have been suggestions that it could be some sort of experimental facility or military training style set up. There's just so much we don't know."
Ami suddenly thought of something else Kunzite may not have known about. "And the other day...the patients were escorted to a small English-style village called Doyleton, and left to roam around. There seemed to be no fear of anyone escaping, but the villagers...." she trailed off, remembering her conversation with one of them. "I think that they are either in on the whole thing, or the entire village is a fake, just like this institution."

The sounds of the fight were only growing louder as more nurses and orderlies began pouring in through the doorway. Usagi covered her ears at the screeching sound of the alarm, it sounded like they were all going to be separated and escorted out soon!
"Kunzite!" she shouted over the noise. "We'll be meeting outside the female block tonight if you want to join up for the night-- or look for us on the Sun Room bulletin!"
As the nurses came over to their table she turned to Ami and whispered, "Let's talk when they let us out again." There were some things they really needed to speak about alone...
