Hopefully, they would find some sort of monster on their way to the kitchen, fighting generally cheered HK up, and SubZero would rather wander around and face the hospital alone rather than put up with an unhappy HK.
It wasn't like he needed the help, both of them were fully capable of working independently, but wandering around together did provide advantages. Under normal circumstances he would have wandered around alone, but he was weakened temporarily after each use of his ice powers.
