lighthearted: gesture, smile, down (frustrated)

Day 27: Breakfast

Day came too soon.

Sora hadn't been able to find Rena, had instead been forced to crumple onto the grass of the recreational field and bleed all over himself, and hadn't even accomplished what he'd been sent out to do. What he'd been entrusted to do. He didn't know how he was going to be able to face Renji and the others, but he also knew he wasn't going to hide from them, either. That would just be low, after all, and he was ready to face up to the consequences.

He didn't try to make excuses for himself. Even though there had been a Special Counseling patient, they had managed to take her down by sheer numbers. The fact that he hadn't seen any sign of Rena was what had him the most worried. He hoped he could find her today.

The boy laid in his bed for a good while that morning before his nurse finally came in to collect him. She clucked over the bandages wrapped tightly around his chest and leg, and asked him if he was okay to walk.

Once Sora assured her he was fine (he didn't really want to use crutches, as that would just attract attention to himself, and he didn't need others worrying over him), they made their way to the cafeteria. Sora yawned and winced against the bright light of morning - it seemed even earlier than usual, and he realized why when they entered the cafeteria and found it empty.

The boy shuffled over to grab a chocolate chip pancake, a bowl of cereal, and a glass of milk (good for the bones, or so his mom had always told him) before settling at a table. He kept an eye on the door, hoping he would see Rena walking in soon.

Allen leaned his head on Bridget's shoulder, trying to steady his breathing. How was it going to be okay? He wanted to ask, to yell. Just how was any of this going to be okay?! But he held it all back. It wouldn't help, it wouldn't do to get mad at the only ones trying to help him.

"Because I wished for it," he said to Rukia. "He died, but... the Earl said if I wished for it... he'd come back." He could almost see the graveyard on that dark and cold night. "He did... but he became an Akuma... because of me. The dead aren't meant to rise again. I didn't know... I didn't want to hurt anyone..."

He shrugged his thin shoulders. The ghost... no, she couldn't be a patient. "I don't know," he shook his head, "I think so... she got me and then..." Rhode. But Rhode had still been able to run. Rhode hadn't been shaken the same way he had. But Rukia wasn't supposed to know about her... He didn't want them to get hurt. Rhode was his problem and he'd find a way to handle her.

Bridget kept a light hold on Allen, running a hand over his hair and wanting to hurt whomever had made the kind boy from yesterday so unhappy.

He had nothing to say to either of them as he had no clue what an 'Akuma' was. It seemed like something he should know about though and he didn't want to seem like a moron.

SO he did the only thing he could: he held onto his friend and offered comfort.

"Oh, Allen," Rukia said quietly, "You... you didn't know. And I know that doesn't make you feel any better, but logically, you have to understand that." She wanted to tell Allen, I know how it feels to hurt someone you love. I killed someone I loved. But she didn't know Bridget, and didn't really feel comfortable talking about something so personal in front of the girl.

Then the Head Doctor's voice rang out over the intercom, and Rukia's only consolation was that she might at least get a chance to draw something. First, though, she would have to go talk to Captain Hitsugaya.

Standing, Rukia reached out to squeeze Allen's shoulder. "Let's talk about it later, okay?" she said gently. Then, to Bridget, "It was nice meeting you, Bridget." Turning, she headed to the sun room, trying not to look as though she wanted to run away.
