Day 26: Cafeteria, Lunch

Scar felt cold and sick, though more the latter than the former. As he rose from his bed, he didn't quite know which way was up, and the artificial light coming from overhead seemed as hot and as blinding as the Ishbal sun.

His head hurt, but that was nothing new. After all, the last thing he remembered from the night before was fighting a homunculus off of Lust and then having a conversation about events best left forgotten. The man hadn't been his brother. He just hadn't. And if what Lust had said they'd done to her was true...

Scar stood with shakiness that he wanted to attribute more to a bizarrely weakened physical state than a mental one. Had he been knocked out by some kind of lurking monster before the morning had come? He felt as if he had been out for days, being a veteran of such circumstances, though as he took the practiced role of being an obedient follower behind the nurse and orderlies that came for him, it didn't seem as if much had changed.

This place was probably just playing tricks on him again, and he was tired of being the man left out of the loop. He grabbed some food he didn't really care for and sat down, not seeing anyone he knew already seated. On one hand, he wished he had someone to talk to, and on the other, it scared him that he was no longer used to being alone.

He dug his fork into his food and tried to block out any related thought.

At the mention of other demons, Hiei's anger flared up, showed by the scowl on his face. Oh, he knew another demon quite well, yes...but that particular demon wasn't wanting to be pointed out, instead preferring to drown himself in his human disguise.

How quickly his fury at Kurama rose up again.

"Only one." Hiei knew Kurikara wasn't a demon, and the woman from that morning was just insane. "But he isn't worth mentioning."

Isn't worth mentioning, isn't worth thinking about. If Kurama wanted to be human, then fine. Hiei wouldn't care. He'd just stab his spaghetti harder for a few minutes.

Apparently Hiei was not getting along with this other demon. Sparda wasn't going to press him for answers, he didn't want Hiei to be unhappy with him, and it would be easier to keep an eye on him if he was on the young demon's good side.

"Well, please let me know if you do find other demons here, or beings that aren't human, I like to know who's who," He did often hide his demon heritage from those who were human, and didn't recognize the name Sparda from myth.

Hiei raised an eyebrow at the sudden request. Ancient or not, that didn't give Sparda the right to suddenly order him around. Did the elder demon think he had somehow found a minion in Hiei?

Well, the tempermental demon would quickly put that idea out of his mind.

"If you want information, find someone willing to be your stooge." Hiei scowled, very willing to prove himself to this stranger physically if it came to it. "I'm not your servant, and I don't have to tell you anything."

Okay, so Hiei was overreacting. But he had been having a very bad day so far, and it wasn't looking to get any better in the near future.

Sparda raised an eyebrow slightly at Hiei's reaction and shook his head.

"That is not it at all. I do not need anyone to be my servant, nor do I wish to have one. If you would rather work alone, that is entirely your choice." Sparda wasn't particularly happy with that choice, but it was Hiei's choice to make.

That didn't mean he wouldn't still help Hiei if the younger demon needed his help.

So, Sparda's answer was entirely unsatisfactory, and Hiei was left to once again try and futilely take out some of his anger on the meal before him. The efforts were even less satisfying now that there was less food to mash into a pulp, but at least he could look over and see Kurama still completely alone.

Nice to see that the humans Kurama cared so much for had abandoned him completely.

Of course, having no idea that Sparda had already committed to helping him--and no intention of returning such a favor--Hiei frowned down at his plate. "I always prefer to work alone. It's easier to get things done without unneeded idiots in my way."

"I have often worked by myself over the centuries. Living among humans leaves me with few options for companions that will live very long, though I have known quite a few humans who make enjoyable company..." Sparda thought about his wife, and his sons, but he was getting off topic.

"You will find, eventually, that it is occasionally worth-while to work along-side others," Sparda once more ate his food, considering the agreement he had made with Tartaros and glancing around the room at the other beings present.

"Spare me your wisdom." Hiei knew about being part of the team, as he'd been forced to in order to earn any sort of freedom from Koenma and forces of the Spirit Realm. And one thing he had learned was that being part of the team only led to greater annoyances, such as his frustration over Kurama.

Hiei shouldn't be that obsessed. But for some reason, it continued to piss him off the more he thought about it.

"I'll do well enough on my own."

Sparda had been fairly certain his advice would fall upon deaf ears, but he still had to try.

"Let me know how that works out for you."
