Day 26: Cafeteria, Lunch
Scar felt cold and sick, though more the latter than the former. As he rose from his bed, he didn't quite know which way was up, and the artificial light coming from overhead seemed as hot and as blinding as the Ishbal sun.
His head hurt, but that was nothing new. After all, the last thing he remembered from the night before was fighting a homunculus off of Lust and then having a conversation about events best left forgotten. The man hadn't been his brother. He just hadn't. And if what Lust had said they'd done to her was true...
Scar stood with shakiness that he wanted to attribute more to a bizarrely weakened physical state than a mental one. Had he been knocked out by some kind of lurking monster before the morning had come? He felt as if he had been out for days, being a veteran of such circumstances, though as he took the practiced role of being an obedient follower behind the nurse and orderlies that came for him, it didn't seem as if much had changed.
This place was probably just playing tricks on him again, and he was tired of being the man left out of the loop. He grabbed some food he didn't really care for and sat down, not seeing anyone he knew already seated. On one hand, he wished he had someone to talk to, and on the other, it scared him that he was no longer used to being alone.
He dug his fork into his food and tried to block out any related thought.

Damn the woman!
Artemis was all but gnashing his teeth as his bewildered nurse escorted him into the cafeteria. How could he, he, Artemis Fowl the Second lose at chess to someone who, until forty-five minutes ago, had never heard of the game?! It was preposterous. Unheard of.
"Thank you," He snapped at Nurse Hedgerow, taking his tray full of spaghetti, meatballs, and salad from her--a bit too roughly for her taste. She scowled at the boy and chastised him. Not that Artemis cared.
Standing at the front of the cafeteria, he scanned the tables, locking eyes with everyone he could. Surely this mysterious person would be looking for his strange eyes. He just needed some sort of recognition in the poster's face... then he'd know.
no subject
L set down with a tray of food. He had no intent of eating anything on it and merely complied with his nurse’s insistence that he take something to the table with him. This was another matter that L had to attend to as soon as possible. He wasn’t sure how long he would last if he couldn’t consume sugar or caffeine, but he was sure that this institute would deprive him of it under the guise of health. He doubted they took the time to consider the possibility that making him eat food that was outside of his usual diet could make him sick.
He pulled off his slippers and sat down, his feet placed firmly under him to hold up the rest of his body. He would have to prepare to be in a weakened state. Already he was formulating possible scenarios that he could use to his advantage during this time. Hopefully, he would be coherent enough to remember and use them properly when the time came.
no subject
When Artemis entered the cafeteria, Light was quick to spot him, but with L sitting so nearby, he made sure he'd waited until he caught sight of the boy's mismatched eyes before giving him a small wave to catch his attention. That wasn't what stood out the most to him, though; Artemis's apparent age was far more intriguing. He wasn't going to bring that up, however, because while he was curious, it would be easier for everyone involved if he stayed on the boy's good side.
Besides, he'd seen some of the comments Artemis had made on the bulletin board. He didn't know just how intelligent he was from those alone, but if he was doing things like writing up transcripts and making note of bulletin trends, it made sense to assume that he was hardly average. Just how far from average he was remained to be seen, but Light got the feeling he'd soon find out.

He sat down at the table next to Light. Producing his two journals, he placed them on his right side--away from Light--eyes narrowed. "Which of you requested the transcripts, and which is just here to stare?"
Oh yes, he was in a bad mood.
no subject
The young man’s demeanor indicated that he was in a bad mood, but L would not underestimate him based on that fact. Even if this anger wasn’t directed towards him, there was no need to provoke it. By newcomer’s actions, L was able to confirm that he wasn’t familiar with Light after all, but he still felt it would be in his best interests to watch the two closely.
“It would appear that Yagami-kun was the one that requested the transcripts.” L answered pointing across the table to Light. “I would assume that makes me the one here to stare. I am his friend, and interested in these transcripts as well. Please, don’t let my presence bother you.”
no subject
But that wasn't important. Getting those transcripts was.
"What Ryuga said is true, Fowl-kun," he replied, glancing at L with expertly hidden amusement. "I'm the one that requested transcripts. This is my good friend Ryuga Hideki, by the way, and as you've no doubt guessed, I'm Yagami Light. Ryuga, this is Artemis Fowl the Second." Anymore clarification than that was deemed unnecessary; L could piece together the rest on his own.
With introductions now (mostly) out of the way, Light added, "Thank you again for agreeing to meet with me, Fowl-kun. Without the exact wording of some of those transmissions, it's likely I would have been lost. In a case like this, even the smallest detail can make a world of difference. I am in your debt." That might have been a bit much, but given the situation, it seemed appropriate. He'd just have to wait and see how it was received.
no subject
"I must confess," Artemis said, sitting back with a small shrug. "I normally don't simply hand over information of this nature without receiving something in return." He smirked at Ryuga over his water glass before taking a sip. "It's just not fair.
"Now," Artemis said, steepling his fingers. It felt good to slip back into his usual habits. Therapeutic, almost. "I don't assume that you have anything to give me, so please don't think I'm being unreasonable." He smiled pleasantly, "I'm sure we can come to some kind of agreement."
Artemis' eyes flicked almost nervously back to Ryuga. Why did Artemis get the chilling feeling like he was being put under a microscope, and Yagami was the catalyst? After all, if Ryuga was interested in the transcripts, he should be more keen to take a part in the discussion. 'Don't let my presence bother you'...?

Why did Light choose him to be trustworthy enough to request these transcripts from? What did he make of this boy anyway? Was there a reason he was putting on a weak and needy front for him? He was laying it on rather thick.
Light also, was probably aware of the fact that he didn’t have the upper hand here. Was that the reason he was being overly polite and passive to him? Or did he have an ulterior motive? Was Light purposely trying to portray himself as someone that could be easily manipulated? Was he trying to form some kind of bond with this boy and imply that he could be used? Or was he trying to make it appear that L was the one manipulating him? If that was the case, he was trying to make the boy conclude that L’s lack of participation meant… Was Light counting on using that in some way? If he was, L was sure that Light would have to be careful not to arouse suspicion. It would be difficult to accomplish without him realizing this.
Then there was the choice of words Light had used. L was still suspicious of the fact that Light had managed to miss such key information. If the earlier intercom and radio announcements had nothing worth noting except for childish taunting, why would Light now believe that there was a case? Had something L said earlier caught his attention?
“It is a pleasure to make you acquaintance as well, Fowl-kun.” L said keeping with the formality. There was a shift in the boy’s attitude that was worth noting. The transition between the irritated nature he started with, and the business-like professionalism, showed a great amount of maturity and emotional control on his part. This boy certainly was not ordinary.
Artemis was the most animated of the three. He seemed comfortable with handling situations of this nature. In fact, by his speech and mannerisms, this boy was well aware that he had the upper hand. Light’s statement helped to enforce this fact to him…purposely? If Light was planning to play on this, surely he was expecting L to notice this and follow suit. L would have to do so until he decided that it was no longer necessary--- or until he understood what Light’s intentions were. Artemis’s cocky, self assurance could very well be considered a weakness if the cards were correctly played against him. L made note of it; If Light didn’t take advantage of it, he might be able to do so in the future.
Then Artemis brought up the fact that he was looking for something in return. Surely Light had the foresight to expect this. It was only natural that this boy would bring up an exchange of some sort. The question was what Light had to offer him in return.
The smirk the boy had given L told him a lot. He was trying to include him as part of the conversation. Surely this meant that L’s silent observation was bugging him? L tested this idea by returning a small but short-lived smile.
Artemis continued; mentioning something about coming to an arrangement. That was quite interesting as well. This boy probably already had something in mind. L could learn more about him simply by what he proposed.
Negotiating was the part the required the most caution. L took the young man’s mannerisms as a warning sign to be on guard. He had the confidence and arrogant qualities of a street-urchin. He wouldn’t put it past the boy to try to pull a fast one on them if he found an opening to do so.
L then noticed the young man’s eyes briefly darting back at him. Was he bothered by something?

But Artemis was smart-- just how smart still remained to be seen-- and so any digging Light tried to do on him would have to be done with extreme caution. It was likely he shouldn't even bother, what with their surroundings and how quickly it would alert him, but there had to be something more to be gained from the situation than just the transcripts.
Whatever Light ended up investing in this resource, he expected it to be paid back with interest. The only question remaining was how to exact that payment.
"An agreement? That would be for the best, but it depends on the terms of that agreement. Something too open-ended or that can be interpreted in a number of different ways won't work at all... in the interest of fairness, of course." The words were spoken mildly enough to avoid giving offense, but there was still an undercurrent of warning. Light might be willing to play a more passive role to see just what Artemis was capable of, but that didn't mean he couldn't give him a challenge. That was better in the long run anyway because he could hardly be an accurate judge of Artemis's character if he handed everything to him, could he?
"Do you have any suggestions?" he asked, smiling blandly. "They are your transcripts, so it's only fitting that you name some form of price for them. I can't guarantee that I'll be able or willing to pay it, but it should give us a good place to start." If L asks, I'll just tell him I was trying to determine how trustworthy Fowl is. It's feasible enough with the way we've been interacting, and if Fowl truly isn't trustworthy, I'll know to find a way around that if I decide to use him. Going through this much trouble for some manuscripts that might not even be accurate is a farce no matter how you look at it, but if I can gain something from it, I'm willing to go through with it.

His box in the Patient Possessions room? Such a venture could get Light and Ryuga killed, though, and Artemis didn't want that. The monsters that roamed the institution at night were fates Artemis wouldn't leave his worst enemy to. Okay, well, maybe he wouldn't.
He already had the promise of a weapon from Haku. He had all the protection he needed via Obi-Wan, maybe Renji, and the mysterious poster. Plus, if that wasn't enough, he had eight vials of monster blood that would heal him should he find himself in a tight spot. Artemis was set for battle.
But then again, there was one thing that was always being created. The one thing that he would freely trade, because it was readily available to those careful enough to look. The very thing Artemis was giving to Haku in exchange for under-the-table support.
Information.
The boy's smirk returned, certain that he held all the cards. "I have options for you.
"First, one or both of you can retrieve my file from this room," Artemis pulled out his map, displayed it for both Ryuga and Light to see, then pointed the room out. "The staff calls me Sean Malloy here.
"Second, and probably equally risky, is retrieving my box from Patient Possessions storage," Again, the boy pointed out the room. "I've heard that it's guarded by monsters, so my last option will probably sound the best.
"I want the names and room numbers of any patients you have met and meet within the next three days, and," Artemis stressed the word, just to make sure he was clear, "Any rooms you come across not shown on this map. I want to know where they are, what's in them, and anything you come across that could be considered interesting. Of course, if you choose this option, I'll give you a copy of the map to work with."
Artemis thought he was being more than generous. After all, it didn't take much brain power to write down names, room numbers, and fill in vacant map spaces. The other two options would be much worse, he knew it.
"Before you choose," Artemis began, his expression now very dark and serious, "I am not responsible for what you meet during the night. I don't want to hear that one or both of you has mysteriously vanished from the institution while on one of my errands. I don't know how long you both have been here, but these requests are not free of danger--nothing is, here. I urge you, no matter what you choose to do, to be careful at all times."
I'm not telling them to be careful, I'm protecting my informants, Artemis told himself firmly before taking another agitated sip of water. Morals were starting to grow on him, and he didn't like it.
"But even if something happens, I was never involved," The boy finished firmly.

L carefully analyzed each of the options Artemis’s provided them with; they revealed his true nature. The boy must have used similar tactics to sucker many people into doing what he wanted, and gotten away with it. Otherwise he wouldn’t have been so careless.
Not only had the boy revealed that he wanted his information files and personal items that were in storage, he had also revealed that he was called “Sean Malloy”. If either Light or L wanted to negotiate with him in the future, having this information or items would come in handy. But L didn’t think possessing either of them would amount to much. After all, Artemis wasn’t planning on them taking either of these options. It meant risking their lives, and that was hardly worth a few transcripts that may not even contain any information of value. And there was no guarantee that these transcripts hadn’t been altered. In fact, L was sure that if he or Light questioned the other patients in the institute, they could easily obtain all of the information they needed---and maybe more, without having to pay anything but a little time.
The boy’s next mistake was revealing the map to them. In the time that he had shown it, L had already managed to commit it to memory. There would be no need for copies. L had never approved of information being committed to paper or any other media, why should he start now? Even if this map was changed in some way, it wouldn’t take long to figure out what had been altered, and if there was a purpose for it; why.
L was willing to have it tested, and perhaps he could have Mr. Doe assist him if the opportunity arose. He still needed to gain some more trust from his roommate and this could be an opportunity to do so if he was careful. However there were more pressing matters that needed to be attended to…
There was no doubt that this boy was clever, but L was not fooled, and he was sure that Light wasn’t either. This boy was certain that the third option would be chosen. The other two were things he was would like to accomplish, but the third was what he really needed. Based on this suggestion, Artemis was attempting to gain power. Knowledge of the buildings layout, and names and locations of people could amount to a great deal when applied correctly. And based on the fact that the boy was asking this, he was planning on using it to his advantage.
The problem was that information of this sort could jeopardize their security in the future if the boy chose to use it. Not only would Artemis know who they had contact with, but who would know more about them, and he could use this network as a way to track them. It was hardly worth a few transcripts.
no subject
To L’s disgust, he’d given Mr. Doe a similar warning last night, but this was merely a coincidence. Despite the similarities, they were said for different purposes. Giving Mr. Doe a warning about what he was getting into was necessary after he saw L’s face. It applied to everyone and his roommate had unexpectedly wandered into these circumstances. L couldn’t have any liabilities on his hands that could be used against him. Both parties were at risk. Artemis was just using it as a ploy, the only one in danger here would be Light. Artemis wasn’t jeopardizing his own safety, and he had yet to realize that L wasn’t planning on jeopardizing his own safety for him.
L was not going to be easily toyed with. He felt it was time for Artemis to realize that he was not dealing with his usual caliber of clientele. What he decided to do next was test the boy by placing him on another plain of thinking. This could be beneficial in revealing more about him intellectually. To do so, he needed only to apply pressure on him. Artemis would be getting nowhere if he continued with the way things were.
L picked up a noodle from his plate, already his untouched food had gotten cold. He held it up in front of him, watching the noodle dangle before his eyes, purposely emphasizing that it wasn’t even worth making eye-contact with this Artemis as he spoke. “Surely, you recognize that your suggestions for payment benefit you more than anyone in this deal. It makes me wonder just how trustworthy you are, Fowl-kun. I can see quite clearly that your real goal is for us to take the third option. However this offer is hardly worth the transcripts and you know this very well. If this is the first thing you lay on the negotiating table, I suggest attempting to use a new tactic on us; such as revising your options.”
no subject
But maybe he could pull it off. The fact that Fowl had included a warning, while not a very heartfelt one, implied that there was still some humanity left in him, and when Light weighed that against his age and apparent intellect, he reached the (tentative) conclusion that Fowl was salvageable. He'd probably end up killing him in the end anyway, so it was hardly concrete, but that potential was something he'd need to consider before he made his next move. He didn't want to waste it, but if Fowl became a threat, it was a loss he was willing to accept.
Unfortunately, L's presence at the table made it impossible for him to try anything without arousing suspicion, so after he'd heard Fowl out and listened to his "friend's" contribution, he said, "Although I don't approve of the way he said it, Ryuga's right. All three of these options work more for your interests than ours, and for someone who spoke against things that were unfair and unreasonable not too long ago, defining terms like those doesn't reflect very well on you." His chiding tone struck an interesting contrast with L's flat one, and while he neither wanted nor intended to give the impression that he was talking down to Fowl by using it (he'd used it on L plenty of times after all), he hoped that the boy would at least take it as extra incentive to rethink his strategy.
Besides, it also had the added bonus of undermining what little authority L had in this debate and keeping his behavior consistent with what it had been like before he regained ownership of the Death Note. L had to have noticed the shift his personality had undergone when he'd forfeited it, and having it shift once more so soon after Higuchi's death would have disastrous results.
He refrained from saying anymore, though, wanting to see just where Fowl would take the discussion and not wanting to provide any possible cues for which conditions needed improvement. As someone who'd been on the receiving end of L's tests in the past, he had a good idea of where the detective was going with this. Since gauging Fowl's intelligence and his personality was something Light also had interest in, he might as well go along with it.
no subject
And now Ryuga was toying with his food—obviously a ploy to get a rise out of Artemis. The boy merely smiled at the man. “Whether or not I am trustworthy is not the issue, Ryuga-san. I offered a service that I could provide—blindly, of course. Yagami-san will tell you that until our discourse on the bulletin board, we had never even seen one another. But, if you’re skeptical…”
Artemis opened his journal to the first page of transcripts he had—the ones from the first night he had spent in the institution. He pulled his tray of food aside with his right hand and set the journal down so that both Light and Ryuga could see that he was reading what was written.
“Oh, dear, and you call me a liar! Of course, I have no time for petty games at the moment. No, no, right now, I'm at the end of another long night and yet again I've been too busy looking after your collective behinds to give you new games to play with. You'll just have to deal with the same old toys for now,” Artemis looked up, smiling. “I’m sure that since you’re asking for exact transcripts of last night, you must have ones of the night before. Feel free to compare them.” The boy shut his journal with a definitive snap and took another sip of water.
“The folly under which you were operating, Ryuga-san, is that both you and Yagami-san are the only ones who think that the good Head Doctor places clues in his little speeches. But of course, you probably already know that since I copy down the announcements verbatim, I am of the same opinion,”
Artemis paused, recollecting his thoughts. “Being the intelligent people we are, we were correct in thinking the answers lie with the Head Doctor. He has given us clues, but never a direct answer. And now, since we’re on the same page, I can safely say that you indeed want to see these transcripts, for they contain a direct answer,” Artemis’ expression was completely serious. And it was true—the transcripts he held both mentioned the reason so many had been taken from their homes, and where the secret of the institution was housed.
The boy leaned back, smiling again, “In light of this fact, I don’t believe that my options need any revision.” If these guys wanted to play hardball, Artemis Fowl would play hardball. “Even though this setup clearly favors me, I feel as though I am entitled to ask for what I desire, since I—not you—am the one holding the transcripts you need.
“But, I’m willing to give you a fourth option,” Artemis folded his hands on the table, his expression all-business once again.
“Metal and Earl Grey Tea. 400 grams and 15 packets. It doesn’t matter what shape the metal is in, just as long as it weighs 400 grams. That shouldn’t be too difficult. Just a quick trip to the kitchen, after all,” Artemis smiled. “How does that sound? Does it benefit you now?”
Now it all came down to what answer they gave… Who would object and who wouldn’t? Artemis waited, a faint smirk on his lips.

If he was to think that mental institution was not part of the equation, and there was any worth to the idea that both he and Light were the product of one’s imagination, then it made sense that Light was Kira and he was trapped in a mental institution with his worst enemy. Light as Kira would devote his time to finding a way to dispose of him, once he was no longer necessary to him. Until then, Light would more than likely continue to find a way to form alliances with people who would best serve his needs and in the end were disposable. Light formed no long lasting bonds with anyone.
L frowned as his spaghetti noodle broke from the continual stretching. “Yagami-kun, although you appear to sound sincere, your words have an undertone that leads me to believe you are not giving Fowl-kun the proper respect that he deserves. For his young age, Artemis appears to have acquired intelligence and maturity beyond his years. Surely reprimanding him was not necessary as I am sure that he had his reasons for it.”
He turned his attention to the boy, “I just so happen to like Earl Grey tea myself. If I acquire some I would be more than willing to share some with you.” L gave Artemis a small smile, “Free of charge.”
no subject
Naturally, most if not all of those events could be traced back to the man currently sitting across from him, but even though it grated on him, Light knew he would have to tolerate L's presence for a little while longer. An opportunity to get him off his back would soon present itself, he was sure of it. L wasn't the most social of creatures, and with how much time they'd spent in each other's presence within the past three months, whatever tactic he could think of would likely serve as a temporary measure at best, but it had to be enough. But what?
And as Light silently observed Artemis under the guise of considering his offer, he realized that he was staring straight at his answer.
... However, the plan that was quickly unfurling in his mind had to be put on hold when L decided to make yet another ill-timed and extremely unhelpful comment. An eye for an eye, it seemed like, but the added remark about the tea meant that unless he said something soon, things would rapidly spiral out of control. If Artemis was already being supplied by tea, it was entirely likely that he would request something more difficult to obtain to replace it in their deal, and if that item was something else L could offer...
It all boiled down to a simple case of supply and demand. That on its own would have been fine, but as L obviously had no intention of helping him acquire the transcripts (Light's interest in them was stronger than ever after what Artemis had said, and unlike L, he simply would not be content with anything less than a perfect record), he was feeling incredibly irked. This was too much trouble to go through just for some transcripts, surely. Damn L for making this harder than it had to be.
Sending the man a look, he said, "I happen to be of the opinion that everyone-- regardless of their age, maturity, reasoning, or intelligence-- deserves to know when they have said or done something worthy of reproach. I fail to see how doing that is any more disrespectful than stating outright that you question someone's trustworthiness or avoiding eye contact during a conversation with that same individual."
To Artemis, he smiled somewhat sheepishly and said, "If any of that did offend you, I sincerely apologize. I didn't intend to do so." Another small glance in L's direction, as if he had thought of apologizing on his friend's behalf as well but thought better of it. Who knew? Maybe "Ryuga" would follow his example and apologize himself.
"In regards to your offer," he continued, expression turning thoughtful again, "the fourth option sounds like the most preferable out of those already mentioned." It was unlikely any further compromises would be reached after all, so even though he found this "quick trip to the kitchen" to be more than slightly dubious-sounding, it would have to do. "Would there be a specific time you would like to receive them by?" he added, already knowing that Artemis would want the tea and metal delivered soon but needing a more definite time period than that before he considered accepting. He wasn't a trained fighter by any means (what he did know consisted mostly of self-defense his father had taught him and the largely spur-of-the-moment fist fighting that he'd used against L), so if there were monsters in the kitchen that he couldn't deal with on his own, he'd need to arrange for some kind of back up or escort. Things like that took time, and while he was sure metal would be easy enough to locate, finding packets of Earl Grey tea in a darkened kitchen or storage closet would be considerably more difficult. With any luck, Artemis would understand that, but if not....
no subject
Light seemed to have a good head on his shoulders. He took control of the situation, and recognized Ryuga and Artemis' spat for what it really was. And then he took Artemis' fourth option before the boy had a chance to revise it. Yes, Light had business-sense, which pleased Artemis. Sure, trying to outmaneuver Ryuga was entertaining, but this was business. Ryuga had merely succeeded in getting Artemis to push back, which wasn't furthering the negotiations. Light had realized that Artemis did indeed have the upper hand, and took the deal.
Getting his way always gave him a warm, fuzzy feeling inside."Wonderful," Artemis said to Light with a smile, "I would like the metal as soon as you're able. I understand from personal experience that the task can be slightly difficult. As for teh tea, if you have to horde packets for a couple days, that won't be a problem. Just give them to me as you get them. Perhaps we could have a chat every once in a while, then."
Artemis flashed his smile to Ryuga, "And I'll take you up on your offer as well. I've enjoyed our conversation, and who knows when I'll be able to talk with another intelligent being again." His smile slowly metamorphosed into a smirk, "You nearly had me. Nearly."
And back again to a pleasant smile to Light, "And there's no harm done, Yagami-san. I didn't detect the slightest intention to patronize me. It's not personal, just business, correct?"
Artemis pulled a sheet out of his first notebook, "I prepared a copy for you beforehand, Yagami-san. Here is the first third of the transcriptions. I'll give you the second page upon receiving the first installment of tea, and the third upon receiving the metal," Of course, Artemis had saved the most important announcements for the third page--the metal, after all, was much more important to him than packets of tea. "I hope you'll find that this arrangement is reasonable," The boy finished with a smile, extending the folded page to Light.
The Hunter was back, and in top form.
Or so it seemed.

Artemis’s latest statements had made it was clear that this boy was attempting to drive a wedge between the two of them that L had started. This was exactly what he was hoping for. If Light hadn’t picked up on what he was trying to do, he would fill him in later on the details. What better ways to gain information than by having Artemis treat them as two opposing individuals? ---Not that L trusted Light not to take advantage of this as Kira… He would simply have to keep a close eye on him.
L’s test had shown him quite a bit about Artemis. It seemed that he delighted in being in control and quick to recover when challenged.
Still the boy had left out an important detail that L felt compelled to inquire about; “Out of curiosity, what kind of metals are you looking for? Surely since you offered specific requirements, you might be seeking a specific metal as well. Or did you mean that any old cheap metal will do? There is a difference between tin and titanium. Why neglect such an important detail?”

There was also the fact that L would be able to confirm whatever Light told him about Artemis on his own, and depending on where he decided to take this plan, that could complicate things considerably. Artemis's untrustworthiness also had to be brought into consideration, and with the conflicting information he could deliberately end up feeding both of them, well, Light had his work cut out for him. It was possible he could use this excuse if L did end up hearing differently from the boy, but that did not eliminate the possibility that Artemis could find out that he was using that tactic.
The best way to circumvent all of this would be to win Artemis's cooperation somehow, but again, he couldn't do so without letting the boy know that the upper hand was his if he chose to take it. If L chose to make a similar move, it was possible that Artemis could end up manipulating both of them, but Light was certain that both he and the detective would find out soon enough if he tried.
What he needed was a bargaining chip capable of demanding Artemis's attention and his loyalty. Something powerful enough to counter whatever schemes the boy could come up with without earning his anger or resentment. His options were sorely limited in this department-- coercion wouldn't work, and it was incredibly unlikely that he could get either Artemis's file or his box from the Patient Possessions room without getting himself killed-- but he had to think of something if he wanted this to work at all. If not, Artemis would merely serve as a source of information on the institute, and while that would be fine if L wasn't around, it simply wasn't good enough now that he was.
Until he came across a solution for his dilemma, he'd just have to work on establishing himself as an indispensable business partner. That on its own might not be enough, but trying to cultivate a friendship with the boy would yield even less results. He didn't seem the type to trust easily at all, and with how little his earlier attempt to manipulate them seemed to bother him, Light doubted he had very much experience with on the matter. A business relationship would be more beneficial for both of them anyway.
With that decided, Light nodded at Artemis's explanation and the statement that it was "just business." Professionalism was important here, but playing the role to a tee would alert L to what he was up to and possibly give Artemis the impression that he was trying too hard. That was the last thing he wanted.
Accepting the folded piece of paper, Light smiled gratefully and said, "Yes, it's reasonable. I'll do what I can to get those items to you quickly, but depending on the type of metal you have in mind, that may take even longer." Damn L for bringing that up. If Light had ended up collecting the wrong sort, he could have always used the fact that Artemis had never specified what type to retrieve to his favor, but now that the question was out there, he could hardly ignore it.
Interesting that he was now the one looking for loopholes when he had warned Artemis off doing the same. The fact that Artemis had singled out L as the intelligent one also annoyed him, but playing into that belief would only end up hurting him. Light doubted that Artemis would care to ally himself with someone he viewed as intellectually inferior after all, so it would be best to disabuse him of this notion as quickly as possible.

He stopped and shrugged, "I did not specify simply because it does not matter what kind of metal I receive--as long as it is metal. And Yagami-san seems bright enough to know what that is, wouldn't you agree Ryuga-san?"
At that moment, the intercom signaled the end of lunch. Artemis sighed and gathered up his journals. "Time to waste more time," He muttered with a sigh. Before he stood though, he offered his hand to Light.
"It's a pleasure doing business with you. Let this be the beginning of a profitable relationship," And with that, he shook Light's hand, smiling up at the teenager.
