Day 26: Cafeteria, Lunch

Scar felt cold and sick, though more the latter than the former. As he rose from his bed, he didn't quite know which way was up, and the artificial light coming from overhead seemed as hot and as blinding as the Ishbal sun.

His head hurt, but that was nothing new. After all, the last thing he remembered from the night before was fighting a homunculus off of Lust and then having a conversation about events best left forgotten. The man hadn't been his brother. He just hadn't. And if what Lust had said they'd done to her was true...

Scar stood with shakiness that he wanted to attribute more to a bizarrely weakened physical state than a mental one. Had he been knocked out by some kind of lurking monster before the morning had come? He felt as if he had been out for days, being a veteran of such circumstances, though as he took the practiced role of being an obedient follower behind the nurse and orderlies that came for him, it didn't seem as if much had changed.

This place was probably just playing tricks on him again, and he was tired of being the man left out of the loop. He grabbed some food he didn't really care for and sat down, not seeing anyone he knew already seated. On one hand, he wished he had someone to talk to, and on the other, it scared him that he was no longer used to being alone.

He dug his fork into his food and tried to block out any related thought.

Interesting that the man would introduce himself with only one name. Especially since it did sound Asian, but if that was how he wished to be addressed, Gin had no qualms about it.

"Likewise. Ichimaru Gin." He nodded slightly in acknowledgement as he sat, smile fixed upon his face.

"Y'been here long? I think I've see y'face around here an' there."

"Too long, though I suppose it doesn't take much time to pick that to describe the length, does it?" Homura closed his eyes for a moment, considering the question. It was so easy to loose track of time, especially when Homura hadn't ever been in the habit of keeping an eye on it. "I believe this is my fourth day."

Homura smirked at the thought of Gin having seen him around. The demi-god had been something of a social butterfly; repeat contacts in Landel's had become something of a rarity for him. Of course, there were exceptions--wonderful exceptions that involved Sanzo, for instance. "I'm not surprised. I've been something of a drifter when it concerns the various social circles. I'll assume you've been here for some time yourself."

Gin was content to pick at his meal in-between conversation. It would take a little while to form a good impression of what this Homura person was like, afterall.

"'Bout the same," Gin admitted. It was surprisingly difficult to eat noodles without chopsticks, he discovered. "An' what's your take on th' place?" he questioned. "Into th' arts n' crafts like the rest?"

[personal profile] screwthegods 2007-08-14 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Homura raised an eyebrow at the quick mention of the arts and crafts group. Not that it was an uncommon topic, but this was the first time Homura had heard it brought up without prompting, either on his part or another's, and the demi-god was fairly certain Gin's name hadn't been one of those listed on the board.

"I've worked with them a bit, yes." Homura smirked. "Though I'm more interested in using them for my own goals than following their orders. It turned out to be a profitable choice last night." One katana, and one bottle of healing blood. By far the best Homura had done in his stay.

Of course, last night might truly be the last night, given the looks he'd gotten in Ed's room. "Though I doubt they'll be eager to have me involved still."

[identity profile] traitors-smile.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
An oddly straightforward answer. Gin wouldn't mind doing the same with them, unfortunately Homura had the upper hand. He wasn't considered a traitor among the majority of the members.

"Ara~, that so?" He gave a low, quiet whistle. "Lucky for you. How'd y'manage that one?" He quirked an eyebrow of his own. He doubted the man would be quite as forthcoming with his methods, but it never hurt to ask.

[personal profile] screwthegods 2007-08-14 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Gin was mistaken when it came to Homura's honesty. He had no problem bragging about his success because all villains must share, and no doubt he could stop anyone who might try and attack him for his gains.

"There was a particular type of monster in the hall we went to. Apparently their blood has the power to heal." Grinning, Homura motioned to his obviously injured left arm. "Though I haven't taken the time to test the theory yet."

Homura studied Gin for a moment, then ventured a guess. Perhaps he would be wrong, but given the man's actions, the demi-god doubted it. "You aren't part of their group. Do they have something against you as well?"

[identity profile] traitors-smile.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently the man liked to gloat. Given what he'd accomplished though, it sounded like it was at least well-deserved. So apparently there was some truth to the radio broadcasts.

"Sounds pretty valuable if it's true," Gin said, setting his fork down and taking a sip of water.

The man paid attention too. "Ah, I'm jus' tryin' to get a feel for it I guess. See if it's somethin' I might be interested in," he lied easily. There was no reason to reveal everything right from the start.

"Yes." Homura was well aware of the rarity of certain supplies, and had no doubt that many would try and take his vial if he wasn't careful about it. Gin could even be one of those, something Homura wasn't likely to forget despite his confidence.

He looked Gin over as the man made his claim. Getting a feel for it? Something seemed off about the words, as comfortable as they were, but Homura wasn't one to make too many accusations without proof. "It'll be easier if you talk to them directly. They seem fairly accepting of new recruits."

He chuckled softly, shaking his head as he finished the thought. "So long as you are willing to bend to their ways. They have an arrogance about them that conflicts with mine."

[identity profile] traitors-smile.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Gin decided to stay with his claim, despite Homura's suspicions. "Those answers are easy 'nough to come by," he explained, "but I've found it's sometimes best t'get a second opinion." He gave a small shrug.

"I'll be sure t'note yours down as well," he smiled his fox-like grin and gave a short laugh.

Perhaps it was Gin's appearance: his easy smile, his narrowed eyes...but Homura still found himself not believing the other man. It was a smart enough move, the demi-god had to admit. Homura was a stranger, and it was foolish to confide everything to someone you only just met. Still, it made him curious about what Gin was hiding, especially in regards to Arts and Crafts.

"I'm certain you will." Homura smiled. If Gin had some agenda against the group, it didn't affect him in the least. His association was casual at best, and it wouldn't hurt him in the bunch somehow fell. "I wonder what other opinions you've gotten? It'd be interesting to hear."

[identity profile] traitors-smile.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Homura knew what he was doing, but Gin could easily see the man's over-confidence. That sort of thing could get him in trouble if he wasn't cautious. "I hear it's not bad for some of th' weaker patients here," he mused. "But for the stronger ones it just holds 'em back, ne?"
screwthegods: (Confidence)

[personal profile] screwthegods 2007-08-14 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Homura was well aware of his own arrogance, and the risk involved. But his over-confidence have served him well so far, and he wasn't about to change. Grinning at Gin's reply, Homura couldn't help but point out the obvious. "That is virtually what I said to you. A true observation, however."

He looked over Gin, judging what he could of the man's build under the Landel's uniform. "And which side do you fall on? Are you weaker, or stronger?"

[identity profile] traitors-smile.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Gin's smile only widened at Homura's observation, though he gave no reply for the first. The question, however, was a different matter.

"I know 'nough to get by," he said smoothly. "Guess it depends on who you compare me to." He gave a little shrug, "Not dead jus' yet, so that's a point in my favor, ne?"
screwthegods: (Better Than You)

[personal profile] screwthegods 2007-08-14 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not necessarily." Having died just before his arrival at Landel's, Homura knew quite well that death wasn't too much of a hindrance here. Letting out a short laugh, Homura met Gin's eyes with his two-colored gaze. "You are a clever one, Ichimaru Gin. You've been getting as much information as you can from me while hiding everything possible about yourself. It's admirable."

Yes, Homura enjoyed mind games, even when someone tried to play them with him.

[identity profile] traitors-smile.livejournal.com 2007-08-14 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Gin met Homura's smile, not at all surprised when Homura pointed out the obvious. Many of the easier patients had hardly noticed such things, and those that had, hadn't the nerve to bring it up. It didn't bother him in the slightest though. "Said I was jus' gatherin' information from th' start, didn't I?"

He took another drink from his plastic cup. Homura was a fun one, but not without his own dangers, Gin was sure. "Though I'll take a compliment when I c'n get it."
screwthegods: (Confidence)

[personal profile] screwthegods 2007-08-15 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"True enough." Homura leaned back in his chair, perfectly relaxed without a hint of anger or malice at Gin's slyness. He hadn't been lying when he said it was admirable, but more importantly, it made Homura curious, a sensation he highly enjoyed. Heaven got so predictable, after all.

Taking his own cup in his hand, Homura had a drink himself--though neither the oolong tea nor strongest shot his associates had preferred, water was still quite good. He took the time to consider what he should say next; though Gin's purpose (and success) hadn't upset him, there was simply no way the demi-god was going to sit back without achieving some gain of his own.

"I suppose I could ask them." Homura tilted his head up as he spoke, studying the lights above them. "I'm certain the Arts and Crafts group would be interested to know that someone was asking about them. Ichimaru Gin."

[identity profile] traitors-smile.livejournal.com 2007-08-15 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Gin caught sight of Ran when she entered the room and was rewarded with a wave. In return, he sent a slightly more natural smile and a nod her way. Seemed she was keeping company with Jack. He might have to keep an eye on things. It wasn't enough to distract him from his conversation with Homura though.

He almost laughed at the veiled threat Homura dangled before him. Tattling? He wasn't about to give the reaction the man seemed to want though. "Kind of you t'be so concerned. I'd hate to reduce you t'messenger boy, but if you insist. Be sure to tell Abarai-kun that I'd like a word. Oh, and send lil' Toushirou my love. He does try so hard, bless his heart."

He made an act of checking his pockets, "There's a few more an' y'know, maybe I should write this down. I know it's a lot t'remember."
screwthegods: (What's up?)

[personal profile] screwthegods 2007-08-15 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Good. Gin wasn't rattled so easily by such a weak attempt. But he did drop his guard for a moment, one Homura didn't miss, as he was greeted by a woman.

Everyone was capable of making friends, it seemed.

"My memory is quite good, actually...though I earn enough of their ire without needing your help to antagonize them." Homura chuckled as Gin put on his show. He was half tempted to add that he should be able to remember a great deal after living for over 500 years, but why give Gin any freebies? Instead, he took advantage of what he had gotten.

"Do they hate you so much?" He smirked, lazily looking over Gin, though he knew the man would give away nothing. "You must have done something terrible to them."

[identity profile] traitors-smile.livejournal.com 2007-08-15 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Gin had no doubt that Homura was as good as his word. It just seemed to come with that personality type. Gin clicked his tongue in a 'tsk-tsk.' "Ara, there you go thinkin' the worst of me. I'm hurt Homura-kun." Though his tone of voice was correct for what he was saying, the smile didn't leave his lips.

"Done something terrible? Now what would make y'say somethin' like that?" he asked sweetly. He knew he didn't come off as the most trustworthy or charismatic person, but to assume he'd done something awful to them already was a bit harsh. True, but harsh nonetheless.

...Homura-kun? Homura had lived a long life where he had met a great number of people, but he was fairly certain that in all that time, not one had ever called him Homura-kun.

Not even Rinrei, who loved to joke about how naive he was.

But that train of thought was particularly dangerous with a person like Gin around, so the demi-god fought away the memories, and laughed as the obviously fake 'injury' he had caused. "Because of the type of people they are. Accepting, wanting to help the weak, believing themselves to be a happy team. Those types have a rigid sense of what is good."

Homura grinned. "And I doubt your actions qualify."

[identity profile] traitors-smile.livejournal.com 2007-08-15 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"What is 'good' can be different things to different people Homura-kun," Gin replied without missing a beat. "As m'sure you're aware. But I'd hate to bore you with th' details. Let's jus' say we've got some differences of opinion, ne?"

Gin picked up his fork, twirling some of the pasta around it as he'd seen some of the others do. "An' what about you? Sounds like you don't much approve of how they're runnin' things, mm?"
screwthegods: (Confidence)

[personal profile] screwthegods 2007-08-15 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Homura smirked at Gin's still evasive replies. The man was well practiced at this sort of thing, it seemed. But Homura was stubborn, and, perhaps more importantly, amused by this game. "I doubt I'd be bored at all. I enjoy hearing about differences of opinion, and about the lives of others."

After spending the first part of his life alone in a jail cell, there wasn't much that didn't amuse the man.

Seeing Gin's method of eating the pasta, Homura did the same. It was more effective than what he had been previously trying. "They're free to run their group as they wish. I'm simply not fond of taking orders, or seemingly altruistic actions."

A decently sized bite of food later, the demi-god finished the thought. "There's nothing wrong with being selfish, though that seems to run contrary to popular opinion."

[identity profile] traitors-smile.livejournal.com 2007-08-15 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"I imagine you're quite good at findin' such things out," Gin's smile never wavered, "you seem to have heard several stories and opinions already. Must be your natural wit n' charm."

He managed a few bites of the foreign food. It wasn't rice, but it wasn't awful. "I've found most people are pretty selfish creatures, whether they realize it or not. Everyone wants something, ne?"
screwthegods: (What's up?)

[personal profile] screwthegods 2007-08-16 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Homura grinned yet again, enjoying each new twist and turn. This latest one, for example. On his surface a call to the ego, yet Homura had no doubt that it was sarcasm at it's finest, along with an obvious ploy. A rather bad attempt, if the man actually expected it to work at this point. Obviously he hadn't made a suitable enough impression. "Many tend to share their opinions more freely when confronted with a conflicting point of view. Typically, it's that simple."

Because Homura was not one to hide his own opinion about things. Ever.

"They do. Especially those who won't admit it. They're the ones who tend to want things like world peace and happiness, which are really much larger than individual yearnings." Of course, many of the ones who did admit their own selfishness also wanted to change the world; Homura himself had wanted to destroy it, to replace it with a more perfect paradise.

Ah, dreams. It had felt rather good to execute that plan, even when he lost in the end. But then, perhaps that had been the point after all.

"Are willing to admit that you are a selfish person, Ichimaru Gin?"

[identity profile] traitors-smile.livejournal.com 2007-08-16 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
More freely? Well, those 'many people' were also likely to be complete idiots. People rarely realized how valuable information could be and those that did... "That a fact?" he asked, taking another bite of his lunch.

He was getting pushy. The obvious implication that he wanted to know Gin's opinion on something before the conversation ended was almost smothering. Gin was a practiced hand though, and didn't let his irritation show. What did he want? Maybe there was a time long ago when he had wanted to change the world. Or at least the world he was residing in at the time. The afterlife was really no different from life on earth, especially if you were a being with any kind of spirit power. You were just as hungry, just as cold at night, just as...

"I am a very selfish person Homura-kun," he replied, giving the man the answer he was likely craving. He'd shown enough evidence already just by evading questions while drinking in Homura's answers. It was better to have the man form generalizations anyway. "Satisfied?"
