Night 25: Intercom, Late Night

The intercom came on with its usual nighttime crackling, though this time the Head Doctor seemed to be in a calmer mood than he had been in before. His tone was cool and his breaths were even as he spoke, even if his speech itself contained the same megalomaniacal ranting as usual.

"Hm. Perhaps I'm overestimating you, Radio Man. Perhaps I'm putting too much stock in how much sway you have over the patients, in how much you can truly help them. Why, yes, even I am capable of admitting my errors, as few and far between as they may be!"

He coughed, cleared his throat, and continued.

"But enough of that wretched man, dear patients. I believe it's time to announce something grand, something new about this Institute. Oh, yes, we're always coming up with new surprises for all of you, as undeserving and selfish as you all may be, but luckily for us, the new secrets of this building may only be opened by those of supreme wit and physical prowess. Allow me to give you a hint, in fact, much like the savior you all put so much stock in: Down is the way you want to go if you want to uncover the secrets of this place, ladies and gentlemen, though uncovering the keys to knowledge will be far more difficult than any of you can imagine."

A pause, and then he sighed and chuckled lightly.

"Not that I imagine many of you will succeed in the tasks ahead of you, though perhaps the newly-arrived members of Group 4 will be able to assist all of you in your future endeavors. Good luck to you all, though I doubt you'll make much use of it."

The intercom slowly died down into a small whine, then silence.

If there was one thing JJ was well-versed in, it was comfort. Namely, the comfort of his own bed. No other bed could ever measure up to the one he had. So when a crackle and a click (...odd, what?) stirred him from his sleep, the first thing he noticed was wrong was that his pillow and blankets were so not as fluffy as what he was used to.

This naturally led to the conclusion that he must not be in his room at all, which jolted him wide awake altogether. He sat up so fast, his surroundings spun, and he ended up flopping back down on the pillow—

—which felt way harder than it should've. What?

JJ tossed the pillow aside and felt beneath it. Flashlight?

...Okay. This was really creeping him out. What the hell was happening? This was completely not funny at all!

He grabbed the flashlight and after some fumbling, flicked it on.

Yup. Not his room. It looked like a hospital room, but not really. There was no television bolted to the ceiling at that ridiculous angle no one could comfortably watch from, none of those beeping machines...

In fact, it seemed more like a cross between a motel and a hospital. Like...a permanent hospital room. Whatever that meant. It made more sense in his head. Or maybe not. Nothing was making sense right now, to the point where his brain had shut out all of the this is impossible thoughts, leaving him to go through the motions.

He began rifling through anything that could be rifled through, searching for the gun and badge he logically knew wouldn't be there. Of course not; why would they go hunting through his house to bring his sidearm and everything here?

On the other hand, he did find a few little things. A radio that didn't work, even though it didn't look broken. Pens (not Bic, not Papermate, not nothing. Weird). A notebook-type of journal. And some odd-looking clothes, which he also happened to be wearing.

Ugh. What kind of fashion statement was this? Smiley faces? Maybe Wal-Mart had kidnapped him or something.

Not that he had been kidnapped. Had he? That was too surreal for him to even think about. It left him completely bewildered. Sure, technically his chances of getting kidnapped were higher than most as a police officer, but still. That was so...Hollywood. And dramatic.

There was probably a saner explanation for all this. Which he needed to find.

Which meant he had to go beyond this room. Could he even go beyond this room?

JJ edged towards the door, the heavy flashlight gripped in his hand just in case there was someone outside. He twisted the knob. The door swung open without fuss.

Empty.

But a hallway, filled with rooms in a row. Like...yeah. A hospital. Or at least some sort of institution.

For a split second, panic started to rise before he managed to quash it down. He could do this. He was a cop, right?

Absolutely.
