The kida had slumbered half the night away a shelf above The Oxford Book of English Verse, and when awakened, the ichor along its scales had been scraped off by the books and smeared across several shelves. In the dust, and the gloom, it looked like nothing more than the water-spotting that affected many of the beat-up old books.
