Night came, and surprisingly… there were no surprises. So far, anyway. Anise had been a little on edge that evening, expecting that the Head Doctor might do something to interfere with her plans, but it looked like everything was going just as she needed it to, for once.
Except for finding Luke. Despite looking all over town and asking around, there didn’t seem to be any sign of him. There was a chance that Guy ran into him, but… maybe it would be worthwhile to stop by his room, just to be sure. Anise was planning to visit another room in the same hallway, anyway. It’d only take a minute.
With no roommate to chat with, Anise had spent the dinner shift preparing her belongings. She changed into her Fon Master Guardian uniform and slipped her new tool belt on. It didn’t match the cute colors of her uniform, but that was a sacrifice she was going to have to make. Her mallet went into the holster meant for hammers, and in the other pouches, she placed her miniature flashlight, binoculars, some granola bars, and the radio-like thing a woman in town had given her. Who knew? Maybe it’d turn out to be useful.
Her remaining food supplies went into a cloth shopping bag, along with some useful-looking medicine and first aid supplies. It was a little cumbersome to carry, and she knew there was a chance she’d have to ditch it if she was in danger. But there was also a chance that those goods would come in handy, especially if this turned into a long journey.
Finally, she retrieved the pillowcase stuffed with metal objects that had been sitting untouched for several weeks. Her first order of business for the night was delivering it to Alphonse.
Anise paused in the doorway, looking back into her room for several long seconds to confirm that she was okay with what she’d decided to take. After all, if this went well… maybe she was never coming back.
