Snapping awake instantly was not comfortable. It wasn't comfortable at all. Especially not with the adrenaline still pounding his heart and veins, his breathing still ragged with the fear of the darkness and the monster. For several minutes Gabe could only stare at the ceiling and wait for the tingle in his limbs to ebb.
When Rachel came to collect him, Gabriel went with her quietly. They hadn't even reached the storage room. He still didn't have a torch. Tonight, he'd have to face the darkness without light--again.
The thought filled him with terror. His eyes were hollow, his mouth was drawn to a tight line, but his being radiated prayers. Would his Master answer?
He didn't know. The Lord didn't always.
The Archangel was tired enough, distracted enough, that while trying to wind his way through the tables and chairs, he misjudged a step. His foot caught on the edge of a seat nearby where a man sat, and with a yelp Gabriel stumbled, trying to save his food and his balance at once.
