Day 68: Intercom, Dinner

As it turned out, all of the female patients were wise enough to remain indoors, so the nurses didn't have as much work to do as the intercom came on and the end of the day officially hit.

"Hello, patients! This storm put a wrench into some of our planned activities, but I hope that all of you stayed dry and safe, especially those of you who are sick!" The Head Doctor did a spectacular job of sounding like he was truly worried for the patients' well-being.

"For dinner, we'll be serving some gourmet spaghetti with marinara sauce. There'll be parmesen cheese and some crushed red peppers on the side to add if you wish, not to mention a salad! I hope that you all eat well before lights out, and those of you who've been paired up with some of our new arrivals, make sure to make them feel welcome."

The announcement echoed through the halls as the patients were led back to their assigned rooms, and Landel finished it all off as most of them arrived to their doors.

"That's all for now. Sleep well, everyone, and we'll be talking again come tomorrow."

The intercom turned off, leaving patients with only their roommates as company.

Oh, Soma! Tsubaki smiled.

"I know who you're talking about! She's a very helpful person, I'm sure you can trust her advice," she said with a nod. Tsubaki wasn't quite sure what the girl had been about to say, if Korra was referencing something specific about her own world, but she understood what she meant about problems with innate abilities. "There's a lot the prisoners here don't understand about this place, but from what I learned there's a special device that blocks people's powers here. If you have some abilities of your own, some of them should come back at night? Night is sort of an unusual time..."

She saw where Korra was looking, but trying to explain that there was some kind of mysterious, crippling infection running rampant and that people needed a cure was a whole other obstacle to tackle. Korra had arrived at a particularly trying time... not that there was ever a good time to arrive in Landel's.

"Well, that's good to know." She'd have to keep Soma in mind, then, if what Tsubaki said was true.

"Yeah, she mentioned something about a machine, and the weirdness at night." Korra was still riding on the hope that her bending would come back come nightfall. She needed her bending. It wasn't a luxury.

"I'm glad you had someone to help explain what the Institute's like," she replied, taking a seat on the edge of the bed facing Korra's. "I'm sure it's hard to imagine such a place exists, but there are plenty of people here who will be happy to help you adjust. During the day, it's not so bad... Night time is when you should be careful, though. It's been especially, um, unsafe lately."

To put it mildly...

"The doors will unlock soon, but sunrise tends to play tricks on people? Once the sun comes up, everyone falls asleep and wakes up in their rooms again. That's why... that's why no one's found a way off the premises yet. I don't mean to overwhelm you, I'm sorry, I just wonder if you wouldn't... feel safer staying inside for the night?"

"...Especially unsafe how?" Korra raised an eyebrow glancing sideways at her roommate. She had since started back in on her noodles. Her eyes widened completely when Tsubaki suggested staying in.

"Not a chance. Especially if they give me my bending back. Even if I have to bide some time before I can bust out, I might as well get the hang of where everything is."

Was Korra overwhelmed? Yes. A lot more than she was letting on, too. Did the idea of monsters roaming in the darkness scare her? Probably not as much as it should have.

"Powerful abilities don't really come back in full. You might need to be careful about conserving your energy if you have to do something extreme," she tried to explain.

Until the other girl saw what the Institute was like for herself, Tsubaki's advice could only do so much good in this situation. She knew what it was like, how easy it was to make oneself deaf to warnings, but she had to try. What else could she do? She wasn't in a position to stop someone from striking out on their own, danger or no danger... Hoping Korra would stay inside where it was safe was closer to a selfish wish on her part than anything else.

"But I understand... Just be watchful! There are plenty of other prisoners around to travel safely with, but if you come across any aggressive people or creatures, please... don't try to engage them..." Tsubaki's gaze dropped to her lap. She could go on about how Korra was at risk of getting hurt until she was blue in the face, but there was another reason she wanted to avoid conflict between prisoners and the monsters. It was just a matter of finding the words.

"What I meant about it being unsafe is that over the last few days, something unusual has been happening at night time, something that hasn't happened before. Things aren't quite what they seem. It's complicated, but monsters might not really be monsters right now--the man who runs this place has tricked some of us into hurting each other against our will. Like brainwashing. So you need to be very careful about avoiding danger. If a monster finds you, it might not know what it's doing. It might actually be one of us."

Korra was silent a moment, bewildered as she watched and listened to Tsubaki.

"In that case, I'll just fight to knock 'em out." But how could that happen? People don't just turn into monsters; the idea was ridiculous. She had never heard of anything like that before- not even in stories of the Spirit World.

Korra half-heeded Tsubaki's advice regarding the danger. If she got her bending back, she could fight. Even if they somehow 'weakened' it. Yeah, it would be annoying. But she could deal.

This head doctor guy was going to pay for kidnapping all of them.

"Avoiding a fight if you can would be best. I wouldn't want you to be in any more danger out there."

Like there wasn't already enough danger to go around, and then some. But trying to get across just how important it was that Korra not unintentionally injure a fellow prisoner--like Leanne or Kurogane, or any other sick prisoner who might have taken a different form--was harder than it seemed when Korra didn't know the same awful grief that came with losing someone to the transformations.

Korra nodded. She had never been good at avoiding a fight. In reality, she was usually the one who instigated it in the first place. But she would have to be careful. She would have to discipline herself.

The Avatar fidgeted in her chair. She was getting antsy. How long until they could go out? How long until they gave her her bending back? She hated this sitting around nonsense.

Well, Tsubaki was glad the other girl seemed to be taking her words to heart in some respect.

"I'm sorry, it's a lot to get used to, I know," she said. She tried for a smile. "I'm hoping things will calm down soon. I have to do some important errands tonight, or else I would say you should come with me."

Inviting a new resident to the morgue would just be in bad taste overall.

"That's an understatement... But yeah, that's fine. I'll just head out on my own." She was sure some other prisoner would be okay with putting up with her. And she would be useful if she got her bending back- especially since this wasn't someplace where people could bend.
thecamellia: (what it's all about)

[personal profile] thecamellia 2013-02-14 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes... It was a bit of an understatement, wasn't it? Tsubaki felt bad for that, but she gave a small smile all the same. There was enough to alarm the other girl already without Tsubaki adding to the pile.

She stood up. "I'm here to help if I can. It's important to lean on each other while we're here." Her own dinner sat waiting for her at her desk, and she moved over to take a seat in her desk chair. "So if you have other questions, any at all, I'll try and answer them, of course. I'm happy to help."

"Thanks, I'll keep that in mind." It was good that she had an ally from the start. Tsubaki was friendly and helpful, and that was what Korra needed right now.

It was then that the intercom rang. The Avatar took a deep breath and watched the speaker as their captor gave another one of his stupid speeches.
