The way that Mikado tried to strain to see more of the room, to get an idea of exactly what sort of trouble he was in -- that was all rather run-of-the-mill. What stood out was that the boy really had the gall to say that he was okay, though it was clear that even he wasn't sure of that. Startled by the question, then? Either way, it was fun to watch him squirm.

The doctor smiled. "Oh, you don't know? I thought you would have paid attention to the stories of how patients are brought up here for experiments, seeing how you thrive on the unusual in that way." But maybe Mikado hadn't found it quite as entrancing when he was a part of it.

Well, he was about to have all of that pushed to the brink, and he wouldn't even be able to say that he hadn't asked for it in a way. The doctor moved closer, but the light that was suspended over Mikado was situated in such a way that even then, he wouldn't be able to pinpoint any specific features.

It wasn't even that the doctor was scared of what would happen if the patients learned his face. It was more about the fact that the situation was more unnerving for them this way. "Is this what you imagined it would be like?" he asked.
