Night 65: F-A Block Hallway

[from here]

Lana had pried herself back out of bed before exhaustion could overtake her -- now, she moved through the hallway with purpose. Anyone who knew her might be able to spot that she was moving at perhaps half the speed she usually did, but the hall was empty.

Goodness, it was really dark out here! She hadn't expected that when she heard the voice. It was like there was a power outage in here, but the intercom worked, more or less. Quickly flicking on her flashlight, Flora pointed it this way and that, lighting several doors along the sides as she walked down the hallway before coming to an end. If behind these doors were rooms just like the one she was in, then this must have been some kind of dormitory wing. It was kind of like being in school, though even the halls of Alfea weren't this creepy at night. Which begged the question: where was she, exactly?

There were bars in the windows in the room she appeared. Hmm. That definitely was not normal. This was no Omega Dimension, but maybe it was some kind of prison? But then where were the guards? And the light? And what kind of prison unlocks its doors. None of this was making sense, so far.

Flora put her finger to her lip. And then there was that voice. It was so cryptic and made her feel quite uneasy. It didn't sound like any of the wizards, and there would have been no point for any of them to have changed their voices. They...they enjoyed causing misery and reveled in letting their targets know the most who was behind it, after all--after everything-- so why would they make it harder for anyone to know it was them?

Flora gripped her flashlight tightly and her head dipped a little, sadly. This wasn't the time, she couldn't that overwhelm her. With a deep breath, she straightened her head and continued on her train of thought. No, this was someone new. Who was he, and what did he mean? He mentioned five people turning. Turn to what, exactly?

Or maybe it was turning into something.

There was a worried crease in her brow. It was like he was talking about werewolves, or like that one mistake with Professor Avalon, but that was magic, and...that was impossible, wasn't it? Not even the wizards had that kind of power, anymore. Who would or even could do such a thing from Earth?

She hoped to find out.

Nina moved through the darkened halls swiftly, almost like a shadow herself, a determined expression locked in place. There was no time to waste right now, and she knew it.

Almost there, almost there...Niikura tried not to run so as to avoid accidentally colliding with anyone, but it was so hard to resist. Time, after all, was of the essence.

This was madness. Torch in hand, Lust slipped through the hallways as quickly as she could, her boots making soft sounds on the floor. It wasn't far to the men's wing. She hoped he hadn't simply been teasing - men could tease and lure as well as women. But she didn't think so.

It wasn't too long before she was back where she had started. Once Tsubaki pushed Scar through the door, she let herself feel a little relief. Thank goodness their luck had held out!

"Almost there."

What Landel had said had to be true. In her experience, they didn't gloat like that unless something was going right for them.

After scanning the area with her flashlight and confirming there was nothing there, she made her way across the hall.

[From here, after he's been healed]

Scar gave one last nod of thanks, turning and walking gingerly down the women's hallway. Rapunzel was amazing, really. Whatever that was, it had certainly not been alchemy. She just sang and her hair... glowed. The inner workings of his legs had been put back together enough so that he could stand, though it was still painful to walk with the pulling of the stitches there as well as on his back.

He did his best not to hunch over as he moved, making his way back to his room. Now he had to face whatever this illness was that had taken such a toll. Worse, he had to face Lust.

As soon as they were all through the door, Kratos was back in position, sweeping the surrounding area for any sign of danger as they made their way forward. They were nearly there, just a turn and a bit of room number-reading to go. It had taken them a little longer than expected, but hopefully, that would turn out in their favor by giving Rapunzel more time to catch her breath in between healings; he hadn't missed her earlier note on the board offering her assistance.

"Do you know her room number?" he asked to no one in particular, although clearly only Castiel would know. It had been a while since he had been on this side of the patient blocks--in fact, he was starting to think that this was the first time--but the numbering was probably the same; it wouldn't be too hard to find the right hall to turn down.

Was it just luck that both Scar and Leanne seemed to be managing their illness (relatively) well, despite Landel's ominous message? Had the five he'd mentioned merely been slapped with random misfortune? Tsubaki couldn't begin to imagine what might trigger a transformation, but she was glad that Leanne was still well enough to venture out with her, whatever the case. Maybe it was dangerous for a sick person to be moving about, but Tsubaki understood the desire to take one's fate into one's own hands.

As they crossed the cell block, she looked over at the other girl. "Now with the announcement, I'm even more sure anybody with the skills to make sense of what's going on will be heading that way. If you feel ill on the way there, just let me know. We don't want to make you feel any worse."

The air tasted sterile, that much was certain. Like ammonia and somehow much like the surface of a cotton ball -- so much so, that when she swallowed, she felt the imaginary fibers scratch her throat on the way down, leaving her with nothing but that bitter taste and dead weight sitting at the pit of her stomach. Everything's really clean, she had thought, but a deep breath of clean (fresh? no, that's not--) air didn't do much to mollify the strange sensation prickling along her skin. No, but it made her gut clench so hard, she felt like she was going to be sick.

It smells like almost-crying, she thought -- like the weird taste at the back of her throat. The more she thought about it, the more it upset her. After all, it was difficult to see within the narrow beam of the flashlight, harder still to shake off the dread weighing her down with every subsequent step. There was something that smelled vaguely like blood in the air, metallic and acrid the few times it seemed to fill her nostrils, and the fact that there was no reiatsu to be sensed nearby only served to heighten her anxiety.

This wasn't Hueco Mundo, but the sense of isolation was the same.

Perhaps that alone was enough for her to determine that this was Not a Good Place To Be.

Knocking and opening one of the doors in the previous hallway yielded an empty room and a messy bed. However, a last minute sense of manners and propriety prevented her from entering and looking around -- Sorry, sorry! It's not B&A if it's accidental, is it? -- it was enough to know that perhaps she wasn't alone in this place, that there were people who could possibly help.

Who possibly needed help.

She'd just have to find them first.

"Um, is anyone around?" Orihime called out in a tentative albeit loud voice, flashlight shining out into the darkness and waving in random patterns (a circle first, then an infinity symbol, then S-O-S). When no one answered, she didn't hesitate, and started out into a brisk walk.

Beneath her, her ankles shivered, cold feet on colder tile.
