Nightshift 62: Cafeteria

[from here]

Yuui was the first to push open the door.  It took a few solid kicks to break the lock, more noise than he'd like, perhaps, but hopefully nothing that would slow them up.  His single blue eye tried to adjust to the darkness inside, scouting the room for any undesirables, but he could only make out a few tables and chairs and precious little else without light.

His footfalls were almost silent, his breathing more cautious as he led the way inside.  The headache that had started earlier was becoming harder and harder to ignore, the loud noises and sudden movements doing little to help.  It was almost a relief that it was too dark to see the sheen of sweat prickling at his forehead or the way his body trembled every now and again as he tried to push forward with weary muscles.  He was beginning to regret not bringing his coat, but the heat would've made it intolerable on top of all the rest.

It wasn't much further to the basement, he realized, though it would be the first time he'd returned to the place since the accident that had cost him his eye and left several other permanent scars.  He had to wonder if Kurogane fully understood what he was asking, for him to want to return to that place.  If the same thing happened again, if they found themselves in that coliseum, would he make the same decision?  It wasn't a thought he wanted with him as he felt his way through the darkness and toward the back of the room.  Kurogane was a much better lead at times like these.

Fai was the one who had said he would come along, and with him not only continuing forward at a decent pace, but taking the lead at times, Kurogane had no reason to think the man had any problems revisiting the Institute's lowest level. What he could gather from the actions though was that Fai was persisting in hiding something. As much as Kurogane knew he could handle, there were actions both knew were more suited for a his own strength - the door lock being one of those.

Kurogane had been intending on handling the lock, even knowing that it would be difficult with his injury, but Fai had gotten to it first. So he'd watched the kicks quietly, swearing internally as the noise pounded in turn with his head, but otherwise letting Fai do as he wanted to clear the path. Only when he had entered into the Cafeteria did he move his eyes away from Fai's back, warning, "Don't over do it," as he took his own survey of the room and stepped back into the lead, "I'll do the next one."

Again, there was little to see outside of the expected. Tables and chairs were the only thing visible, and would hopefully be the only real threat to continuing on. If just the sounds from kicking a lock were paining him, he could just imagine what a monster's roar would do right about then. It was enough to just hope that the next door had already been passed through.

Kurogane kept from sneering when Fai offered him the door and focused instead on the lock that was unfortunately still in place. After watching how much it had taken from Fai to break the previous lock, he'd determined not to waste any more energy than was necessary with getting through this door.

One hit was all he should need, and not with his boot.

Choosing to not use any kind of kick for this particular door, Kurogane set his body against the frame and, squaring his shoulder, rammed the door with his full weight. The rusted lock strained from the hit and almost seemed to withstand the force a moment before the weakened metal pulled apart and clattered onto the tile flooring. The door itself meanwhile flung open, crashing against the kitchen wall and sending an echoing announcement through the kitchen that someone was coming in.

Somehow, the darkness of the cafeteria was less forboding, and Hakkai's shoulders relaxed just a little as he stepped into the room. He still felt wound up, but a touch less so now. And they were one step closer to their destination.

Gren glanced once back over his shoulder as they moved into the cafeteria, almost expecting something to come out of the darkness and drag them back at the last moment. That didn't happen, however, and he breathed a sigh of relief. "So far, so good."

Hopefully, they wouldn't run into any interference on their way into the kitchen. It would be nerve-wracking enough taking that ladder down into the unknown. The last thing he wanted was a fight before they even got that far.

Hakkai nodded. "Hopefully it'll stay that way."

As they crossed through the darkened cafeteria, some part of Hakkai's mind was expecting an attack. To be forced to use the powers he despised - and to be trapped like that - would be very much in keeping with the tricks this place played.

It was something of a relief, though not as much as he'd expected, when they finally reached the kitchen door. It looked like someone had come through here before them, and not with a great deal of finesse, at that. He eyed the smashed lock, and raised an eyebrow.

"Does nobody here know how to pick locks?" Honestly, it wasn't as if he liked the place, but the property damage was just unnecessary.

Alright, so now it was just the kitchen (and the cafeteria, technically) standing in between them and the basement. It seemed popular tonight, though: it looked like the group they were tailing was heading toward the basement as well.

"Not out of the woods yet, so keep an eye out." The cafeteria felt less dangerous than the Sun Room, but it hadn't been too long ago that the place was crawling with monsters. It could've been just that night, but honestly, Niikura still wasn't going to take any chances.

Badd nodded silently. He was used to following younger idiots around, this was no different than his time under Edgeworth--well, Edgeworth wasn't a murderer, but he'd worked under prosecutors who were close enough for government work. He could suck up his pride and play good little lackey until he found out what Niikura was up to.

Shiina hurried along with the group, hoping they would get the walk-in refrigerator soon. The cool air sounded heavenly. While that place did put them even closer to the basement, at least she could have a moment of physical relief from the heat that threatened to take over her whole body.

Rather than taking the long way around, Shiina moved to the serving counted, pulled herself up, and then daintily jumped down to the other side. She felt a little dizzy, but otherwise she managed to stay on her feet.

Feeling a little triumphant at her gracefulness, Shiina managed an honest smile directed towards her companions. "C'mon! Let's go!" Maybe her enthusiasm would help Shou relax more, too.

"Wai--" Niikura raised a hand unconsciously as Shiina swung herself over the counter, and then slowly released the breath he hadn't realized he was holding.

Well, if she had the energy...he guessed it was a good thing that she was being so upbeat, even in the face of something outrageously terrible. He smiled ruefully as she urged them to follow her. "Alright, alright, we're coming..."

It looked like the two they were following had been held up for whatever reason. Niikura shrugged as he inched past, pushing aside the ruined door to the kitchen.

Gren laughed a little despite himself at Hakkai's obvious consternation with the locks. "I don't think they offer that class during arts and crafts." Certainly, he was guilty of smashing open more than a few locks with his shovel to get at what he wanted. "Maybe you could offer to tutor them."

Despite the mix of annoyance and nervousness Hakkai was feeling, Gren's comment drew a smile out of him. "I suppose I could. Though I've had trouble finding adequate supplies myself, and somehow I doubt it would be a staff-approved activity."

He pushed the broken door to the kitchen open. "For the moment, we'll have to take advantage of someone else's rushing."
