Mello heard the second click, heard, like he'd done the night before, the listening, live quality of the silence, and he waited for the taunting to come, but there was nothing this time. He didn't think for a second that meant Aguilar had nothing in store for tonight. Something was in motion already, from the sound of things, which meant Mello had better move, too.
He gathered up his things quickly, sticking the gun in his back waistband, the half-eaten chocolate bar in his back pocket, wrapper folded over. The flashlight he carried, and the radio, he just left. It wasn't any use to him. He'd move fast, and get things done before whatever shit was due to hit the fan hit it. You know you won't get anywhere, the bugs chattered. This place has defenses you can't even imagine. You've seen for yourself that they can laugh at the laws of physics if they feel like it. You're not getting anyplace they don't want you to.
We'll see about that, Mello retorted, and went out into the darkness.
