Night 73: Environmental Test Chambers (Third Floor)

[From here.]

Unfortunately for Lloyd, the moment he stepped through the door was the moment the light in his new lamp gave out. It didn't leave him completely in the dark; Castiel and Kratos were behind him, both with their flashlights out. In the abrupt dimness, though, it made it hard to see the contents of the room he'd stepped into. "Dammit," the teen cursed under his breath, fumbling with the lantern for a moment to see if he could get it to turn back on. To his relief, once he wound the crank for another minute, the lamp flickered back to life.

They weren't in a hall. It was a large, vacant room, almost empty except for a few metal carts and stacked plastic crates. What dominated Lloyd's attention, though, were two large metal... boxes? Houses? They were large enough to have doors, but surely they couldn't be someone's home. They weren't that big. The wall of each chamber had a window that didn't quite feel like glass when he touched it to look into the nearest one. Plexiglass, and bulletproof, though he didn't know either fact. On the other side of the glass...

Excitement sparked.

"Kratos, Castiel, over here!"

Through the window, he could see the distinct platform of another warp pad.

They were in a small, short corridor, with doors along the sides and at one end. Only one other one was open besides the one she'd just stepped through, and the hall was silent. She waited for Ryuuzaki to follow, and then swooped her arm out to point at the door in one fluid motion. "I believe you were saying something about not being the first through here? I think we can safely call that more than adequately proven."

The hacked-off doorknob in the previous hallway had proven it was a group of patients, too, not staff, although that didn't explain how or why the poison she'd picked up had been left behind.

"It's nice of them to leave us a sign," he said, sounding like he doubted that it was nice, depending on who had left the door open. There was a closed door to their right that seemed like it was also worth a try. It would be possible to seed a false route, but--no, he could see the pad through the window.

He didn't like the setup of the room they were about to enter... it was more ominous than a row of lockers or a small gym or a hotel room. That kind of window could take a lot of abuse, and the rooms had thick metal walls. The proximity of the lab made him think that it might be some kind of test chamber, and that could mean that, once they were inside, there might be drastic changes in conditions like temperature or humidity.

Maybe the door hadn't been left open as a courtesy, but as a precaution.

Still, there was no way of knowing where they'd end up next, and anywhere could be a trap, not just a room that looked especially well-fitted for it. If they got through it fast, the chances were better that it wouldn't be a problem.
