Day 69: Courtyard

After shift change, Ed was hauled outside alone even though he really would have preferred to stay with his brother. But the nurse insisted and he didn't feel like putting up enough of a fuss to get sedated.

After scanning the immediate area, Ed walked along the path and looked around to inspect his surroundings. When he reached the further wall that was covered in vines, he paused to look at it and try to decide how likely he'd be able to escape by climbing over it at night.

Well, Anise had done her good deed for the day. Hopefully Daken would remember how much she helped him, in case she ever needed help farther down the line. And now that she updated her maps, she was starting to wonder if other patients had been exploring the medical wing. Maybe she could talk to them and fill in the remaining blanks.

But that was better left for another day. Anise made another stop at the bulletin after the shift changed, and was happy to see a new note from Guy, confirming that Claude and Luke were all right. Now she could stop worrying about them and relax for the next little while.

Having spent most of the day in the Sun Room, Anise was itching to go stretch her legs a bit, so she opted for the Courtyard this time. It was nice to see the place back to normal, after all that weirdness from last night. Walking along the path, Anise stopped to gaze over at the pond, as if making sure that creepy monster wasn’t still there. Or the creepy guy who’d commanded it.

((From here.))

It was true that he'd already been out in the Courtyard that day, but Claude didn't mind getting more fresh air. The sun was gorgeous, and the skies were clear, which wasn't exactly an everyday occurrence during winter. He wouldn't have needed much convincing to go outside anyway -- but when he caught sight of Anise going outside, that solidified his decision.

Thankfully, his nurse didn't seem too bothered by his decision to head outside again. If anything, she was glad to see him step outside after sleeping a whole day. That made it easier to convince her to escort him out of the building.

After a few moments, he located Anise lingering by the pond. Expression brightening, Claude approached her. "Hey," he greeted. "It's really good to see you, Anise."

Anise had been lost in thought, but upon realizing someone was drawing near, she snapped back to reality and whirled around to see who it was. She relaxed as soon she found herself facing Claude, who looked to be in a good mood.

“Oh, hi!” she greeted in return, smiling. “Glad to see you’re up and about. I was worried about you!” It sounded like Guy had caught him earlier, so he was probably up to speed on what he'd missed. “Did you talk to Guy about doing those trials again tonight?” She guessed that they had talked about that, or that Claude had seen the bulletin, but it was a good idea to make sure they were all on the same page.

Scratching the back of his neck, Claude gave a sheepish smile. "I'm sorry I worried you." He could only imagine how he would have felt if she or Guy suddenly slept for nearly 24 hours straight.

But, thankfully, they had the chance to make up for lost time. After getting sidetracked by the weird illness that went around, and then getting sidelined by that extra-long nap, Claude had to admit that he was ready for some action.

"Yep," he confirmed. "And I saw the note on the bulletin before getting a shower, but I didn't have time to write a response before heading out here." He'd wanted to check up with Anise in person, after all.

Good! Just as Anise thought, Claude was on the same page. “Okay! I guess we won’t know what we’re getting into until we get there, but we’re about as ready as we can be.” They were all in good health, and there weren’t any big crises looming over their heads, so this was their chance.

There wasn’t much else that needed to be said on that topic. The toll was going to be left up to Guy, and it went without saying that the two of them were going to do whatever needed to be done to support him.

“Well, since we’ve got some time for once… why don’t we just chat for a bit?” Most of the time, they had to talk about whatever task they were about to take on, or whatever danger they were facing. There usually wasn’t much time to just get to know each other. They’d had one or two good chats before, where Anise learned a bit about his job, his rich parents, and his hobbies, but it wasn’t like she could learn everything about a person in such little time. “I’d like to hear more about you, and your world, and stuff!”
