Night 66: Entry Room

[From here.]

L held the door open with his back as Lana and Gumshoe filed into the room ahead of him.

His heart beat faster as he prepared to follow them. He had been in this area twice. The previous night, it had only been for a few minutes; the time before that, he had been with Jones. The man who had been waiting had been hard to see, even with flashlights, and had thrown a knife at him, one which had found its mark.

He eased the gun from its holster in his coat pocket, making sure he had it in hand before stepping over the threshold and allowing the door to close behind him. It would have been possible to leave it open, but that would leave them vulnerable to an attack from behind. Closing it meant that it would take a few seconds longer to get out of the room if they were attacked, but on the whole, it seemed like the better choice.

He hadn't seen the rain for himself yet, but it was hard to ignore the sound of thunder rumbling above them.

He still wondered who this guy was as they followed him into the entry room. He wasn't acting like some know-it-all hot-shot, which was good; that would have rubbed Gumshoe the wrong way for sure. More importantly, Ms. Skye seemed to think they could trust him, so doubting the guy would be the same as doubting her judgment. But if things went badly tonight, he'd be having a word with him tomorrow!

Gumshoe stopped thinking about it once they were in the foyer. He looked over his shoulder at the other man before nodding at Ms. Skye, then moved forward with caution, choosing to cover the right side of the room and leave the left side to her. He didn't know whether to feel relieved when he noted there was nothing behind the receptionist's desk.

That was odd. Why wasn't anything guarding the front door? He'd say this was the type of place you'd expect to be ambushed, but come to think of it, that applied to most of the Institute.

His throat suddenly felt dry as he approached the building's main entrance, bracing for the sound of one of the doors on either side of him swinging open to reveal a monster. Instead of delaying what felt like the inevitable, he steeled himself, grabbed one of the handles and...

...Huh? "Uh-oh," he said, his voice punctuated by the sound of the door rattling in its frame. "Locked. Hmm..." There were doors in this place that were impossible to open, that much he did know. He'd seen this one wide open before (at night, that was), so he was guessing it had a different lock to the ones that were used in the "sleep study" rooms. It made sense that they'd make the main entrance tough to get through, though. Without waiting to hear what the others had to say about it, Gumshoe rammed the door with his right shoulder a few times. That should have done it... but don't worry! One more shove and--
