Night 63: Bus 2

Kotetsu was permanently twisted around in his seat as he stared out the emergency exit at the bus behind them. Out of nowhere, it had veered right into a tree and dented the side of the bus, leaving the other buses no choice but to pull off to the side of the road and assist in anyway they could. It was hard to tell whether anyone had been hurt, but thankfully every bus was equipped with nurses so Kotetsu hoped any damage inflicted on the patients could be treated immediately.

Either way, the bus apparently couldn't start up again and that left them all little choice but to wait. With little to see and no signs of emergency care or an ambulance, Kotetsu started to get antsy in his seat.

Some of the other patients seemed just as restless as he, but in a much more dramatic fashion. Some stared out the windows with restlessness, with anxiety, and even grim resignation. It seemed like an odd mix of emotions to him, but if they had problems with hallucinations and schizophrenia, the night wouldn't be a very fun time for them.

Soon, though, the sun set, the rays fading with it, and then all hell broke loose. Kotetsu should have read the signs, seen how some of the adults and children on the bus clawed at their seats like they were on fire. When the nurses fell to the floor, Kotetsu instinctively jumped up to assist, but what he saw had him frozen in place. They were literally changing into ghouls and panic quickly overtook the entire bus.

The former Hero was grateful the nurses--Now monstrous villains--hadn't confiscated his new, crappy mask along with his alcohol as he dug it out of his jacket and cinched it to his face. He turned to his partner, but neither Hero needed words. They simply understood and Kotetsu immediately broke open the emergency hatch behind them with experienced ease, while Barnaby tried to corral the masses to the back of the bus. The alarm sounded but it really couldn't be heard over the raucous surrounding them all.

Taura was sitting near the front of the bus. To the nurses, and any patients looking on, she looked like she'd fallen asleep, her feet tucked up in the empty seat next to her. But her eyes were open, if only by mere slits, and she could see just fine. When the screaming started, she sprang to her feet, on the seat. Then she moved, vaulting over the seatback in front of her, and the one beyond it, to the front of the bus.

There was a handle there that opened the front door, but that wasn't what Taura was looking for. She was looking for was a fight. Conveniently enough, there was a creature right in front of her, and she growled at the back of its head. She could see the line of people processing out the door at the back -- it was getting shorter, but it wasn't short enough.

Had the nurses the presence of mind to understand their surroundings, they may have been surprised to find a patient who'd dare to approach them unarmed. But no such emotion registered in the nurse's face as she turned around; there was only the acknowledgment of a target that needed to be killed.

Her empty eyes gazed mindlessly at the patient, and as though through mere instinct, she brought up her arm - one with scalpels protruding from the hand - and swiped it at the woman.

[Joining the fight from here.]

Knowing that Aigis was (hopefully) in a safer place than inside this bus, Sechs prowled forward towards Taura and the humanoid monster.

"Hey Taura! Mind if I join?!" he called as he squeezed by one of the remaining prisoners to flee the besieged vehicle. With the towering woman taking up the aisle, Sechs pounced over the seats on the left side of the bus to get closer to the fight. His muscles trembled from his sudden actions, but the adrenaline rush fired up enough energy for him to fight past his fatigue and throbbing head; all that was in his world was the battle ahead.

Knowing he couldn't fight the unrecognizable nurse directly upfront, Sechs vaulted over to the last row of seats overlooking where the bus driver used to be, stood up on them and readied an attack with a strong kick.

"Watch it! She's striking first!" he warned Taura, twisting to the side and coiling up his leg. If Taura could avoid the attack and land a good hit of her own, Sechs hoped one kick from him after would send the nurse tumbling out the bus door...

Utena didn't have time to think about how screwed up this all was: the bus in front of them tumbling, the nurse writhing in pain as she transformed, the sound of bird-like screams in the distance. If she had taken a moment, she might have stopped to be more horrified, but Landel's had trained her too well at this point. Right now, she just knew that she and everyone else had to move, and fast.

Near the back, where most of the other patients made their escape, Utena spotted Taura towering over everyone else, making battlelust eyes at the newly birthed monster. Her eyes widened. She knew Taura was strong, but was she strong enough? "Taura!" she shouted out, vaulting over seats towards her friend.

Sechs got there first, thank goodness; the two of them together were definitely enough for one human-sized monster. Honestly, Utena hadn't even known what she would have done without her sword, though she would have tried something anyway. She gave a quick nod their way, just enough to let them know she was okay and she was getting out. However, after she jumped out the back door of the bus, she lingered near the vehicle, keeping on guard and watching the fight in case the two needed help. Once everyone was out, they could make a run for it together.

[Assuming Sechs' kick landed so we could coordinate threads -- this was getting complicated, as Barnaby & Kotetsu also wanted to fight her.]

Taura dodged swings as she made her way to the door lever -- just as she was opening it, the nurse got a little too close.  Sechs'  warning couldn't have been better timed.

"Thanks, she said, after ducking under the nurse's swing.   Just in time, too, as Sechs lashed out with a strike that sent her flying over Taura's head, out the door and into the dark outside.

It couldn't have killed her -- couldn't have even done that much damage, but the crowd by the back door was almost gone, and she'd heard someone else call her name, but hadn't had a chance to find out who.   But the answer to that and any to whether or not they'd solved one problem lay outside.  She straightened back up and bounded out the door, throwing one last, toothy grin at Sechs.

Taura dodged the nurse's sharpened swipe, and Sechs' kick hit his target right on the torso, sending the bloody figure tumbling down the steps and out the side door. A victorious growl hissed through Sechs' gashing teeth, and he returned Taura's grin with a nod of his head. All the remaining prisoners in the bus were safe now, but the fight wasn't over just yet. In an intoxicated state of adrenaline, fury and battle lust, Sechs jumped off the seat and made his way to the door, intending to pounce out upon the monstrous nurse and finish the job. He couldn't stand the idea of having the same fate as this stranger; he had to destroy it--

Sechs-san!

"Wuh?" The Replica stumbled to a stop. The shrill voice calling out his name was like glass shattering inside his head as it collided with his craving for violence. Aigis! Was she in trouble?! How could he have almost forgotten her in favor of a fight with a stranger who could have been just as much as a victim as he was?

Sechs paused, his eyes focused on the monster's struggle to get back up on her feet while his ears were ringing with the panicked cries of Aigis. He couldn't run from this fight before him! But Aigis--

"SHIT! AIGIS?!" Sechs tore himself away from the bus's entrance, and ran down the aisle towards the emergency entrance. A fight with that single monster didn't matter, not when a friend was in danger close by!
