Night 62: West Wing, North Hall 2-B

[from here]

Unlike the hallways downstairs, the doors separating halls were actually locked. It was a little strange. Individual rooms, sure, but hallways? It just made him think there were more things worth hiding in this part of the building. Or maybe that was the impression they wanted to give.

It took a little work, but Klavier managed to use the pipe to snap apart the lock of the door and continue forward. He'd never been in this part of the institute before, and judging by the lock, no one else was here tonight yet either. So if there was anything unsavory here, he would be the first to find out. Grand.

His destination was all the way at the end of the hallway and to the left. The Morgue. One couldn't find a much more ominous place to start the night than that. But he wasn't planning to linger here for very long. Really, he was mostly here for confirmation's sake.

Ema Skye had been confirmed to be in her room the night before her disappearance. So she had been taken to wherever it was people went once they disappeared. It was a little more assuring than thinking she might have been... unlucky while wandering the halls. So honestly, he hoped she wasn't here. He would look, but he hoped not. In all probability, she wouldn't be. He was fairly certain those taken were kept alive somewhere. There were too many reports of people returning either as patients or visitors or otherwise for him to assume they were simply killed off.

And then there was Yomi. According to Nigredo, there was a chance she actually wasn't dead at all. Despite being very much dead yesterday, he claimed there was at least that possibility. In other words, she shouldn't have been here either if all was right.

He paused in front of the door and stared at the little sign labeling the door for a moment. He was coming here with the hope of finding nothing. If he could confirm their bodies weren't there, then that would answer his concerns. However, he was positive this hospital wouldn't have a morgue unless there actually were bodies of some sort in there. ...Once he opened that door, he wasn't sure who or what he would see. He had to be prepared for the possibility of finding the corpse of absolutely anyone. Anyone.

He took a deep breath and simply let it out as a sigh. Bodies, he was used to. Bodies of those close to him, he was not. But there was no sense in hesitating. Finally, he used the pipe to strike at the lock on the door a few times. It proved to be about as sturdy as the one separating the halls as it snapped after a few hits. Without any further pause, he pulled the lock off and went inside.

The beam of his flashlight illuminated the door as Seishin headed into the connecting hallway, and he couldn't help but notice the signs indicating the lock had been broken by force. Clearly, someone had gone before them. He swept the beam across the hallway, but as far as the former priest could see it was empty. The person must have gone ahead, then. Had this person also gone to the morgue? With as little as the former priest knew about the area, it was impossible to tell.

Had they really been so lucky to get this far without incident? And someone else had obviously forced their way through the door they needed. Pretty soon they would be on the other side, and they would know the truth. They would see Rose... And possibly Ema.

There was a faint sound of a dying scream from ahead. Was it coming from the morgue? Was it imagined?

Ilia felt an urge to turn and walk away, but no. She didn't deserve to run from the truth. Desperate to keep herself grounded, Ilia reached over and shakily grabbed Seishin's wrist. Her glance towards him was apologetic. "Sorry..."

She took a shaky breath. There wasn't any more time to waste. She was as mentally prepared as she could be. Emotionally... Ilia couldn't afford to let herself hesitate any longer. She took one step with purpose, then another, until she reached the door. Then she walked inside, refusing to turn back.
