Night 61: Kitchen

[From here]

Renji paused to listen again, then moved forward into the kitchen. "Okay," he murmured to Daemon. "It's the middle door in the back. There's a tile in there that's a trap door. Or at least that's how it was before I got my ass killed, so hopefully it hasn't changed."

That said, he moved through the kitchen, heading for the refrigerator. His movements were as silent as he could make them. That sure felt easier wearing his uniform, at least, like he was ready for action.

Daemon moved with him, his eyes watchful and wary as he moved through the kitchen. It was darker in here than it had been in the previous rooms and he flicked his flashlight back on to help.

"Is there anything useful worth retrieving in here, or not really?" he asked as they moved towards the door in the back, eyes skimming over the cupboard doors and drawers that they passed.

"No, those could be found in the upstairs one, if I remember correctly," Daemon mused mildly, following Renji closely, letting his flashlight beam sweep through the room as they went. Checking and double-checking everything. He wanted no surprises.

"Besides, a skillet was more my brother's style than mine. Too unwieldy. I'll do well enough with a makeshift staff for the time being. I miss my old set of daggers, however," he mused as they approached the set of doors at the back of the room. "The middle one, right?"

New territory, now. Hakkai stuck by the door, and played the flashlight over the room. It was certainly larger than any kitchen he'd seen before - and a bit better appointed, too.

From what he could see of the place, it was about what Gren expected of a kitchen--the industrial type, anyway. A little low-tech, but he'd gotten used to that by now. It looked like this was just the equipment, though.

"There's probably a pantry here," he commented, looking around. There were a couple unopened doors. It was just a matter of deciding which to try, and hoping nothing jumped out at them.

There was more than one door off the far side of the kitchen - one of which looked like it had been pried open with even less finesse than the kitchen door. Apparently lockpicking was a dying art, or whoever had come in here had been in a serious rush. They clearly hadn't stayed, though, unless they were waiting behind the middle door to jump out at unsuspecting passers-by. Which, given everything else that happened at night, seemed like a rather odd hobby, but anything was possible.

"Given the size of this kitchen... they might all be pantries," he replied. "Though someone has come through here already."

"Possible," he agreed. "Well, we might as well check that out first, hm?"

If someone had gone to the trouble to break in, and it was fairly clear that they had, from the state of things, they might as well look. Of course, it could mean that whatever was of interest was gone now, but unlike with some of the other rooms, he didn't really think there was any harm in checking anyway.

"I suppose so." Hakkai headed to the abused middle door, and opened it carefully. Just in case whoever had come by was still here.

He glanced back at his companion. "Would you like some too?" It was only polite to offer, after all.

Well, he hadn't really been expecting that offer. How long had it been since he'd had anything not prepared by some sort of institute or his own meager cooking skills?

...he wasn't going to calculate that. It was just too depressing.

"Sure, I guess."

Hakkai put the eggs and butter on a counter, and began looking through the cabinets for a decent skillet. Cake pans, giant crockpot, no, cookie sheet, hmm, that was an idea...

"The other two doors are probably dry goods," he called out, still halfway into an under-the-counter cupboard. "Canned goods should be in there, and mm, tell me if you find any flour and sugar?" In for a penny, in for a pound, after all. And cookies would last a bit longer than scrambled eggs.

"All right." He went off to peruse the contents of the pantries. He had no idea what flour and sugar had to do with eggs, but if Hakkai wanted them, he wouldn't question it.

In the end, he didn't find anything he really wanted for himself, but it had been simple enough to find the containers labeled with the ingredients Hakkai had asked for. He set them off to the side on one of the counters. "Got it."

Hakkai gave him a bright smile. "Excellent. Though hmm, I think I need a few more things." The eggs he'd cracked into the pan and scrambled lightly where starting to cook.

"Can you handle these for a few minutes? Just keep them moving with the spatula."

"Huh? Yeah... I can do that."

Eggs weren't really very complicated, after all. He was pretty sure he could babysit them successfully.
