Night 61: Grand Ballroom
[from here]
The abrupt transition from one location to another was disorienting, but Rita had already done this enough times that she was relatively fine upon reappearing in the ballroom. Since there was no longer any need to tolerate the brat hanging off her thigh, she gave her leg a sharp kick to try and shake him off.
Next, she looked around the room, trying to regain her bearings and remember which direction they came from before. It wasn't long before she located the set of doors across from where they'd gone before. "We're going this way, right?" she asked to confirm, looking to Taura. "Any idea what's back there?" From what the woman was saying before, it sounded like she certainly did.

"I don't know for sure, but there's been a bit of loose chatter on the bulletin. Looks like the staff haven't been quite as careful, the last couple of days."
Or they'd wanted people to know what was down here. That seemed more likely, but it was still their best lead, without Okita's key or any other clues.

Daemon carefully made his way down the steps, his flashlight beam illuminating the way as he descended, alert for any noise or movement. His shields were still in place, a familiar comforting hum of power around him, although severely diminished from what he was used to.
He stopped short at the bottom of the stairs, eyes widening in surprise as he took in the grand lit room, walking forward with unconscious awe. He felt as if he'd transitioned to somewhere entirely outside of the Insititute. Somewhere far more familiar.
"Mother Night..." he breathed, taking in the marble pillars and twin fountains, illuminated by the suspended chandelier and sconces on the wall. His voice, while hushed, echoed back at him eerily in the cavernous chamber.

Three large, hairy rats scurried through the dark near the stairs, their eyes gleaming as the instinct to drive their sharp teeth into human flesh drove them closer to the two men. While two of them weren't ready to attack, one of them was more than eager to take a bite out of someone's leg. Leaping forward, it opened its mouth and tried to latch onto one of the man's calves.
So the rat is totally going for Daemon because IT'S FUNNIER THAT WAY
And the first rat went right for Daemon's leg. Renji whipped the mop handle around in a fast arc to see if he could smash the creature into the ground before it got that far. "Geeze, man, the fuck did you put in your pants tonight?"
Re: So the rat is totally going for Daemon because IT'S FUNNIER THAT WAY
If Daemon hadn't turned his entire focus on the rat launching itself at him, he might have laughed. It might have been hysterics, but definitely laughter. Twice in a short amount of time now. Apparently he was a rodent magnet tonight.
At least this one was more the size he was accustomed to. His staff was held out in front of him, braced for a quick strike in case the creature got past Renji's blow. There would be a second one quick to follow. He was tired of being a chew toy tonight.
"Myself," he retorted to Renji, his golden eyes sharp. "Don't be jealous, I'm sure we'll come across something that still loves you better."
that's fine, LOL. It's what I meant to put in my original post.
The other two rats, meanwhile, weren't deterred by the blow received by their companion. They both simultaneously charged at Renji, baring their fangs as they tried to bite at the back of his knees.

One of the rats got in a nip, enough that it just pissed him off but didn't seriously hurt. Renji jumped back, sweeping the mop in an arc around him to clear the space.
Madarame had tried to show him some of how to fight with a long weapon, but it wasn't something he was expert in by any stretch of the imagination. Hopefully enthusiasm could make up for lack of skill.
He went from horizontal sweep to an overhand strike, whipping the handle down with all the force he could muster at one of the rats while trying to keep an eye on the other.

He hoped that was enough to at least dent the creature's head in. He'd prefer not to rely on his shields alone in this fight. He doubted the rat's teeth could bite through a Black-fueled shield, but he didn't exactly want to test that theory either.

Its other companion didn't fare much better, as the other patient swung his pole into its skull. The rat didn't even have time to make a noise before bits of brain matter and blood sprayed in all directions.
That still left the final rat, however. Unafraid of the violent end that met the other creatures, it tried to leap at Daemon's leg.

Of course it was going after Daemon. Of course. The man's pants were full of cheese or something.
Renji lunged for the rat, using the mop handle like it was a spear and attempted a poke to knock the thing away from Daemon.

Although it managed to escape from the mop's reach, its minutes were still numbered. The rat didn't even have time to give a gargled noise; in fact, it couldn't breathe at all the moment the invisible hand clutched its throat. With one swift movement, the bones in its neck shattered, destroying the creature's windpipe in the process.
After a moment, the rat fell completely still.

He turned toward the east side of the room and headed for the hallway there.
Only the familiar door didn't open. Renji took a few shots at it with the pipe, but no luck. "Fuck," he muttered. "This ain't any different from last time, and it opened just fine then."
He frowned, staring at the door like it had personally offended him while he tried to think of what might be different. "Or maybe not? Dunno. Last time we came through here there were three of us." He frowned. "And one of us was a chick."

"Well. That's a dead end as it is just now. Should we try the other doors? Maybe the number has something to do with it. Or the gender. That makes things trickier..." he mused aloud, eyeing the large room. "I believe Renamon said she'd been down here. If we can;t figure it out, I can leave a note for her in the morning on the board."

He nodded. "Yeah, ask Renamon. Never got a chance to talk to her in person, but she sure seems to know her shit."
Renji crossed the floor and started trying the other doors, with the same amount of success. Feeling pissy, he stopped in front of the red doors. "Well, these are fucking charming."
