What was Harrington's real name again? Clive...no, Claude, Claude--Claude Press something--damnit, he just wrote it down!--ah wait, Prescott, that's right. "It was Claude Prescott," Byrne started again, going right back to the explanation. "He apparently works for the rebel forces that Marc is part of.
"Anyway, he tried to attack Aguilar, but there was a certain device on Aguilar's person that controlled Prescott's abilities somehow. Then Prescott used a wristband on one of the patients--I forgot they'd handed out special wristbands to them--and suddenly Aguilar's device short circuited, and he and his men fled. I'm guessing that device was also responsible for the pink glow and the powers people were able to use again that night." Most of which Byrne had only managed to see briefly before he and Renamon had gone to Doyleton, but it had still been quite the impressive sight and made him wonder just how many other-worldly people were here...
But ah, now he was getting mentally off track. Back on topic. "As for the patient whose wristband caused this to happen, her name is Lydia and she's very important to this place's history as well as another member of the rebel group. Attacking the device on Aguilar was apparently meant to be a means for us to run for it."
Okay, time to take a breather. Phew, that was a lot of explaining in one sitting. Byrne would let Badd handle that much right now, and continue on with the story in a moment.
All this detectiving was going to make Badd look lazy. He'd mostly spent the day insulting people. He ticked over the information in his head.
"Lydia..." At least one name popped out as familiar. Badd chewed on his lollipop thoughtfully. "Back before the military took over Landel there was a woman named Lydia assisting him. I think she was the head nurse, I only heard her over the intercom." So if she was involved that mean Marc's friends had gotten pretty deep into Aguilar-slash-Landel's operation.
"Question being, what's all this rebel business about and why are they helping us? Feels like there's some politics we're not seeing." He gestured for Byrne to continue.
Byrne nodded his head at his partner's remark about Lydia. "Correct. She used to be the head nurse, but then she turned against Landel for whatever reason and is now assisting Marc and the other rebels. I think she also tried to help the patients over the radio once, as well."
At this point, talking was distracting the prosecutor so much that he'd slowed his pace significantly, walking very leisurely now. Ahh, at least they were still going somewhere, right? Badd's question about the rebels had him thinking hard enough to forget about walking at a fast pace, anyway. Indeed, what was the rebels' primary motivation for helping the patients escape? Were they former patients who'd managed to break out and band together? Or were they a rival group who wanted the patients for their own motives? Guess there was no real way of knowing right now, unfortunately. "I don't know why they're helping us, but I do know that Lydia and Prescott managed to escape after Aguilar and his men did. So I'm sure that won't be the last we see of them."
Now he might as well tell Badd the source of all this info, huh? Before he asked about it. "Oh and uh, if you're wondering where I heard all of this from, one of the patients who was there that night wrote down everything he saw and passed the note around. It got into the hands of someone I trust--her name's Renamon, by the way. She let me read the note and gave me some other information from her own experiences." Such as everything that had to do with other dimensions, but Byrne would get to that later.
"Smart woman. It's nice to know a few people are actually sensible around here." He just wanted to be the one who ran into them one of these days.
Badd's pace also slowed as he contemplated the matter of the factions. "Question becomes why they want to help us. I can't imagine anyone would go to this much trouble out of the goodness of their hearts, especially when there's so much danger around." There were no altruists, merely crooks and fools. "So we can't trust them either, but there's a chance we could use them."
Now there, Byrne would have to disagree. "I'm not so sure. Who's to say many of the rebels can't be former patients who managed to escape and now want to help their friends out?" Maybe Badd couldn't imagine it being possible, but Byrne could. At the same time though, he had to agree that they couldn't rule out the possibility of the rebels being their enemies; there was no real proof one way or the other, unfortunately.
However...if the theory Renamon had warned him not to believe so quickly held any truth to it, then perhaps that made this whole 'are the rebels friend or foe' thing a completely different story?
Looks like Byrne had a lot more to explain. "Well, this sort of brings me to that theory I told you about, the one that might explain why we're here to begin with..."
